The Secret Book Swap

The Secret Book Swap is a book group with a difference, starting with no set reading. Here’s how it works: choose a book you’ve read, enjoyed, and are ready to pass on to someone else, then wrap it up—keep it simple or make it fancy, there are no rules, the choice is yours. Think about how you want to introduce your book, letting others know why you enjoyed it and why you think they would too, but without revealing the title or author, as it is a secret swap after all; you might include hints like “a heartwarming tale for lovers of adventure” or “this story made me laugh out loud,” and feel free to bring notes if that helps. On the night, introduce your book to the group without giving too much away, then choose a book that catches your eye—or rather, your ear—and together we’ll unwrap our books and chat about our finds. Each time we meet, we’re joined by a special local guest, and we’ve been fortunate to welcome authors, poets, storytellers, publishers, illustrators, debut novelists, and international bestsellers, all sharing their own unique connection to books and stories. From book-themed parlour games to readings from banned books, we aim to make each event interactive, engaging, and memorable, while also creating space for community and connection, as we’ve loved seeing friendships grow through a shared love of reading and storytelling. Recently moved to the beautiful town of North Berwick a couple of months ago. I’m an avid reader of contemporary literature with a particular new interest in climate fiction, however I will read most genres. Looking to meet some fellow book worms and hopefully some new friends. I’m a new regular at the library and would love to join the group.

Here’s my review: I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was a random selection from a gorgeously curated book shop in East Lothian Scotland in a wee village called Stow. I was in the mood for something halfway between a thriller and a literary novel with a crime element to it. Not being one to begin with genre segregation of books, I was pleased to see that this was advertised somewhere in the hinterland between crime & thrillers. The main characters are truly memorable. I’m left wondering what they are up to now, and I’m really looking forward to the next two books based on the two main characters backstory for Sheldon and next book in the series for Sigrid. The Scandi noir theme of books has been awash and some might say bloated in most recent years, however there are some true gems out there if you know where to look. This is such an intriguing and unputdownable book, it’s not what I thought it was upon reading the blurb it was oh so much more. The humour is pitch perfect as is the reflections of aging and regrets. Looking forward to more from the author. “Clarity that comes from aging-from the natural process of releasing the mind from imagined futures, and allowing the present and the past to take their rightful place at the center of our attention.”

Recently moved to the area and looking to meet bookish people. Love talking all things books and will read just about anything (I was an English teacher before starting my own education company). Currently I’m enjoying a lot of fantasy and would love to meet others in the area.

Damon Fields is born to a single teenage mother in a trailer home in Lee County, in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. He has red hair, inherited from his dead father, who was a Melungeon. He is nicknamed "Demon Copperhead" for the colour of his hair and his attitude (a copperhead is a snake species). Demon spends much of his time with their neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. Peggot, who are raising their grandchild Matt Peggot (nicknamed Maggot). Maggot and Demon are the same age and become best friends.
