Shaun recommends:

Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence

It’s a powerful autobiography about love and identity set just before the First World War in a Nottinghamshire pit village. The author’s deep, powerful and often destructive maternal bond both clashes and amplifies his relationship with two women. It also explored concepts of political class, industrialisation, social norms and discovery of self. I first read/discovered this through English Lit O Level at my grammar school in Plymouth.

Booked Up! (Loughton)

We read from Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels so that we always have interesting book to read and discuss, it’s a mix of genres so something for everyone (at some point). If you don’t want to read the book of the month I suggest reading something else by the same author or picking something of the same genre by a different author so you can add another viewpoint into the discussion. The point of the group isn’t just to read things you wouldn’t usually – it’s also to have interesting discussions when we get together. We meet on the fourth Wednesday evening of each month at The Standard, 126 High Road, Loughton. There is parking to the side and behind the pub, we arrive at 7pm and start book talk at 7:15pm. If you are interested in coming along message bookedupreadinggroup@outlook.com The group is a mix of people so you won’t always see the same people every month – which adds to the flavour of our discussions. February 2026 The Great Gatsby F Scott Fitzgerald March 2026 Lord of The Flies William Golding April 2026 Animal Farm George Orwell May 2026 Catch 22 Joseph Heller June 2026 The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck July 2026 Gone with The Wind Margaret Mitchell August 2026 Slaughter House 5 Kurt Vonnegut September 2026 One Flew Over The Cuckoos next Ken Kesey October 2026 A Clockwork Orange Anthony Burgess

This is all I love in a epic fantasy with its worldbuilding and slow burn plot. The characters are fantastic you feel for there struggles and there wins.

Mei (Porthcawl)

I enjoy intelligent conversations, meeting new people and finding humour in most things. I’m equally happy discussing psychology and philosophy or conversations that can drift from thoughtful to completely ridiculous. I value kindness, emotional intelligence and people who can be playful without taking themselves too seriously. I’d describe myself as grounded, open-minded and genuinely interested in people and ideas.

Mei recommends:

The Satsuma Complex
by Bob Mortimer | Learn more and buy
I loved The Satsuma Complex because it’s funny, odd and genuinely warm-hearted. Bob Mortimer creates eccentric characters who still feel completely real, and the book balances mystery and humour brilliantly. It’s quirky without trying too hard, and it has a really comforting charm.

Lauren (Lichfield)

I’m 26 and recently moved to the area, and over the last year I’ve completely fallen back in love with reading. I’m always looking for people to swap recommendations with, chat about favourite characters, or convince me to add even more books to my already dangerous TBR pile. I love books with vivid, sensory descriptions of settings - especially far away countries, or fantasy worlds that feel beautiful and magical. I love a seasonal read; a theatre in sun-soaked coastal Sicily in summer, or a tiny bakery in autumn. I’m drawn to both fantasy and quieter stories about everyday life, and I’ll almost always enjoy a romance plot, especially slow burns, complicated relationships, and characters with tension between them. Some of my current favourites are Normal People by Sally Rooney, The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan, The Host by Stephenie Meyer, Bride by Ali Hazelwood, and I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett.

Loved reading since I was a kid and used to go through 4-6 books a week! Now, I don’t read nearly as much and would love to get back into it. I just recently moved to Ruislip so also would love to meet people with similar interests as well.
