Louise H (Pontyclun)

I'm looking to get back into reading more regularly after a bit of a break. Iโ€™ve always enjoyed reading and tend to go for easier reads by default, but Iโ€™d like to branch out and try a wider range of books. Iโ€™m hoping to find a local book club to help with that and to meet others with a shared interest.

I have only recently started reading as a hobby but I am really enjoying reading dystopian novels, thrillers and sci-fi but I want to broaden my book horizons and find people to discuss books with, share ideas on books as well as recommendations ๐Ÿ˜Š

Lewis (Bridgend)

I'm a writer and reader from South Wales. I read pretty much whatever takes my fancy in the moment, but my top genres are: fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, and horror. Very open to other recommendations. I guess I'm looking for fellow readers who don't take themselves too seriously, who care equally as much about having fun as discussing books.

Lewis recommends:

Partly what I love about this book is the story behind finding it. I spotted a niche, little sci-fi, fantasy book shop while on a pub crawl with friends. My brain immediately went into side-quest mode, and, to the annoyance of my non-reading friends, I spent the next hour in the shop floating on air. I returned early the next day while my friends slept off their hangovers and challenged the shop owner to find me a book based on my genre turn-ons. After a few false starts, he handed me Replay by Ken Grimwood. The timeloop gimmick nearly put me off, but I assumed that when this came out in 87, it was probably one of the fresher examples of the trope. I'm so glad I gave this a go. The characters were great. It had sci-fi and historical elements, and was strangely hopeful while being bitterly nostalgic. Definitely worth a go!

Alan (Aberdare)

Just moved here. Well read and be nice to meet similarly minded people. I live a one minute walk from the library. Favourite authors: Orwell, Steinbeck and Hemingway but more recently - for an author still alive - Kazuo Ishiguro. Retired (copy) writer. Alan

It should be mandatory reading for anyone who thinks Donald Trump is on the side of the good guys.

Kids laughed when I said I'd write a funny book for children. Well they're not laughing now.

Huw recommends:

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Somehow it's thought of as a fluffy book for children, but I don't recall anyone getting tarred and feathered in any of Enid Blyton's oeuvre.

As an English teacher I've read a lot of books, but have got into a bit of a rut reading mostly non-fiction, and would like to be put in a position where I have to read something that I wouldn't normally. I do a bit of writing as well and it could help. I also like poetry and running, but not usually at the same time.

This has so much depth and meaning. Since I learned about Mary Shelley and her troubled life I have found the book so moving - it describes her own trauma.
