It's a relentlessly sad book yet kept me engrossed through its 800+ pages because she writes so well. I was drawn to all the main characters and felt their pain. Although it should be a depressing read, it is at the same time insightful, and full of love, hope and the value of friendship.

Demon Copperhead

by Barbara Kingsolver | Buy this book

A story about a boy growing up in the Appalachians in America in challenging circumstances. It is a retelling of David Copperfield. The author deals with the issues facing Demon brilliantly and I couldn't put the book down. Will undoubtedly become a modern classic.
