Book clubs in Cambridge

It weaves a story inspired by true events from World War 2 and pulls you in emotionally, that you feel you are living through the historic events with the characters.

A creative partnership. How two talented people can create something far bigger than either would've been able to do alone. Their genre is computer games, but the fractious friend / co-worker / annoyance dynamic applies to many creative fields (e.g. John and Paul?). Also a great description of the creative process, and the excitement of watching a company grow from two employees and a bedroom to a respectable force.

The gradual escape by way of education, of a young woman, from the horror of life as a family under the spell of an extremist, despotic father, in the religious world of the Mormons.

It's not especially plot-driven in that it tells the story of a man's journey from a childhood entangled with a fantastical con-man of a father through to a distinguished career as a British intelligence officer, interwoven with his other life, passing information to Czechislovakia.

Broke open my concept of what fiction could do. Absolutely amazing work.

I first read this book about 20odd years ago, and it made me laugh out loud
