Margot (Market Harborough)

I have loved reading all my life. I’m 61 and a semi-retired English teacher. I find now that I’m no longer in a school (I teach one-to-one online) I miss adult interaction, especially chatting about books and films. I would love to join a book club to share ideas and meet new friends.

Margot recommends:

A Year of Marvellous Ways
by Sarah Winman | Learn more and buy
Like all her books, the characters’ lives intertwine in such interesting ways and each offers wisdom in a unique voice. Her descriptions are so evocative. After reading Still Life, which I loved, I found this book was even better. SW takes you right into the setting so you feel you would like the book never to end.

Mark (Coalville)

Recently retired. I have previously run several book clubs but would now like to join an existing one. I like to share a book I've enjoyed and also get some suggestions from other people.

A Conferecy of Dunces
by John Kennedy Toole | Learn more and buy
I love this book. The characters the humour. It's not for everyone. Some people hate the main character. Personally I found him fascinating.

Bookish (Leicester)

I always have two books on the go, one I'm reading and one audiobook. I read historic fiction, mysteries, some classics/ modern classics and old fashioned thrillers, Daphne Du Maurier is a favourite. I often choose quirky novels by publishers like Persephone or Virago. I would like to find a friendly book group and other bookish people. (I'm a 30-something woman).

Lynda (Hinckley)

I would like to join or start a book club in Hinckley or surrounding area, potentially meeting monthly. I definitely don’t read enough and a book club will be a great way to change this. I enjoy contemporary fiction but happy to try other genres.

Rikki Anderson (Leicester)

I tend to read books that explore psychology, philosophy, and what it means to be human. I’m interested in stories that make you think about meaning, resilience, and how people make sense of difficult experiences. I enjoy discussing ideas and different perspectives, and I’m hoping to meet people who like deeper conversations about books rather than just quick reviews.

Rikki Anderson recommends:

The Humans by Matt Haig
The Humans
by Matt Haig | Learn more and buy
A unique and often funny perspective on what it means to be human, told through the eyes of an outsider trying to understand our emotions, relationships, and contradictions. It mixes philosophy, humour, and vulnerability in a way that makes you appreciate the small things in life.
The Catcher in the Rye
by J. D. Salinger | Learn more and buy
A very honest look at alienation, identity, and the struggle to find your place in the world. Holden feels real rather than polished, and the book captures that uncomfortable space between adolescence and adulthood in a psychologically believable way.
Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel
Beatrice and Virgil
by Yann Martel | Learn more and buy
A strange but powerful exploration of how we try to understand trauma and suffering through art and storytelling. It’s symbolic, unsettling at times, and raises questions about how history and cruelty can be represented without losing their meaning.

justabadger (Leicester)

Just a badger. Reads books. Lifts weights. Overthinks existence. Probably drinking coffee while highlighting passages I’ll pretend I fully understood. I like philosophy, classic literature, psychology and anything slightly weird or thought-provoking. Joining to find interesting people, expand my reading list, and have actual conversations about books instead of just rating them out of 5.

I'm an avid reader in my 40s, looking to meet up with local people and chat about what we're reading. I love sci-fi, fantasy and horror most, but jump around genres a lot; this year I'm trying to catch up on classics I've missed.

LaudatiReader (Market Harborough)

I’ve always been a lover of books across genres and thought a book club would be a great way to share this passion with other likeminded people. Did any other readers from MH manage to find a book club?

NDC (Market Harborough)

I am a 50-something guy with, I would like to think, a youthful outlook and partiality for modernist literature of all shades and varieties. Prior to moving into the area I was a member of a convivial, monthly wine and book club and would like to find something similar.

NDC recommends:

Dubliners by James Joyce
Dubliners

More accessible than Ulysses or Finnegan’s Wake but, within it, “The Dead” is, in my opinion, a perfect piece of short prose with an unbeatable poetic conclusion.
