Lauren

Hi, I'm 27 moved to the area this year and love to read. I'd really like to make some new friends in the area. I mostly read sci-fi and fantasy but I will read anything if I think it's interesting! I really want to meet bookish people so I can talk about books, get recommendations, and make friends.

Lauren recommends:

Deeplight
by Frances Hardinge | Learn more and buy
Even though this is a children's book, it deals with some mature themes. It is spooky, adventurous, and unique. All the characters have distinct personalities and I enjoy the representation of complicated friendships.

I would love the opportunity to make new friends especially ones that I can chat about books with. I love collecting all sorts of books, it does take me a while to read due to reasons but I still love it! I just want to connect with others :)

I’m 26 and recently moved to the area, and over the last year I’ve completely fallen back in love with reading. I’m always looking for people to swap recommendations with, chat about favourite characters, or convince me to add even more books to my already dangerous TBR pile. I love books with vivid, sensory descriptions of settings - especially far away countries, or fantasy worlds that feel beautiful and magical. I love a seasonal read; a theatre in sun-soaked coastal Sicily in summer, or a tiny bakery in autumn. I’m drawn to both fantasy and quieter stories about everyday life, and I’ll almost always enjoy a romance plot, especially slow burns, complicated relationships, and characters with tension between them. Some of my current favourites are Normal People by Sally Rooney, The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan, The Host by Stephenie Meyer, Bride by Ali Hazelwood, and I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett.

Chante

26 year old South African. Just moved to the area after working for a few months on the Isles of Scilly. I’m someone who loves diving into books and exploring new worlds through reading. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or anything in between, I’m always looking for stories that make me think, feel, or learn something new. I’m joining a book group because I want to connect with others who share that passion for reading. I believe that discussing books with others can deepen your understanding and bring out new perspectives that you might not have thought of on your own. Plus, I enjoy hearing about what others are reading and getting recommendations for books I might not have discovered on my own.

Chante recommends:

Normal People by Sally Rooney
Normal People
by Sally Rooney | Learn more and buy
It captures the complexity of human relationships in such an honest, intimate way. Sally Rooney has a unique writing style that feels both raw and restrained, which makes the emotional moments hit even harder. The relationship between Connell and Marianne is so layered. It’s not just about romance, but about communication, class, identity, and the struggle to understand oneself while trying to connect with someone else. What really stands out is how normal everything feels, in the best way. There are no dramatic plot twists or exaggerated characters. It’s the quiet, everyday moments that carry emotional weight. The dialogue feels real, the silences speak volumes, and the story highlights how love doesn’t always follow a clear or easy path. It’s also a book that stays with you. Even after finishing it, you find yourself thinking about the characters and the choices they made. That lasting emotional impact is part of what makes it so powerful.

Ben

My name's Ben, 37. I'm interested in finding a group to start some kind of meet up/book club. I read widely across literary/science fiction/fantasy. I recently read The Place of Tides by James Rebanks, which was a wonderful story about a woman who looks after ducks in Norway, and how culture, gender, and the environment all interlink.

Hi there, I am 58 yrs old and have always lived in the area, and would love to meet a group of people who enjoy discussing and debating different books and ideas. I’m an avid reader of fiction (contemporary and past novels) and non fiction, I really enjoy exploring a range of themes, particularly about relationships and the life challenges we all face, as well as ones such as psychology/sociology which tie into my profession. It would be great to share topics with a group with different interests and be introduced to new genres. Thank you.
