Alan (Llangollen)

So my name is Alan, age 61, and I am an avid Bibliophile. Have started reading a lot again lately partly due to me being an English teacher and also due to the loss of my wife to cancer just over a year ago. Have wide ranging taste in books from fiction to non fiction. Do like dystopian fiction, historical fiction and some sci-fi/fantasy. Non fiction do love anything to do with language and lingusitics. Would really like to find a bookgroup to join to discuss and share our thoughts on books and writers. Look forward to hearing from fellow book lovers !

Alan recommends:

Babel by R F Kuang
Babel
by R F Kuang | Buy this book
This book appealed to me on a variety of levels but mostly due to its take on the power of language-more to the point English language. If you like Philip Pullman then you will like this. Set in the world of Oxford this takes the reader through the world of Babel and its translators and gives a fresh insight into how language is power. We follow the child proteges who are brought from their homelands to the Babel institute where they think they are going to live their ideal existance of scholarly research only to find a much darker purpose at the heart of this powerful institute. Guarantee you will be hooked within a couple of pages.
City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky
City of Last Chances

Came across this book by chance in Booka in Oswestry. Guess it falls into the Sci-Fi/Fantasy World genres best of all-however does have aspects of dystopian fiction too. Has a rich range of characters -including God. The world created is recognisably human and has shades of a darker world that Pullman might create. This is a tale of occupation and colonisation, the eradication of suspect cultures by the oppressors but most of all it is just a tale very well told and an enjoyable read.

Alex (Flint)

I just love learning new things. There's so much! It's simple never ending!! Audiobooks are great to listen to, but it would be amazing if I could combine this passion with meeting new people and making friends in a relaxed atmosphere.

Kayla (Deeside)

I am a 36 year old mum of 3. My youngest is 3 months old. I love martina Cole books and thrillers / crime stories. Would be really nice to join a book club to meet weekly or fortnightly as I really want a hobby for myself that doesn’t involve my (much loved) children.

StuckinaBook01 (Colwyn Bay)

I've always read mainly crime non-fiction books, however, I've recently been fond of romance fiction and have always loved 'based on a true life event' book!! I want to join a book club to socialise and to expand my genre knowledge.

The book is in so many words beautiful and heart-warming, I never thought when I bought the book I wouldn't be able to put it down!! I love how the two main characters are sisters who are torn apart after a tragedy and each page just makes you want to know more.
