Amelia (Cheltenham)

I’m 22 and based in Cheltenham. I enjoy getting lost in a good story, particularly classics, romance and anything with interesting characters and complicated relationships. I’m currently making my way through more of the classics and have been enjoying Jane Austen, Waugh and Maugham. I’m looking for a friendly book club where I can read more consistently, discover books I wouldn’t necessarily pick myself, and have some interesting conversations along the way, ideally with a lovely social side to it too!

Melanie (Cirencester)

I’m looking to join a book club, or perhaps even start a new one, around Fairford, Lechlade or the surrounding villages and happy to drive to Cirencester. I’d like to join or start a friendly, sociable group where we can meet new people, have a good chat and, of course, talk about books! My reading tastes are quite varied. I enjoy writers such as John le Carré and Mick Herron, and I’ve recently been working my way through the Slough House books. I also enjoy Andrea Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano novels. I have a real love of classic English literature too, as well as poetry, and my tastes range quite widely – from Brideshead Revisited to Dracula and plenty in between. I’m also very happy to try books I might never have chosen for myself, which is part of what appeals to me about a book club. If anyone nearby is also looking for a friendly, relaxed and sociable book club, it would be lovely to hear from you.

Imtisal (Gloucester)

We're building something Gloucester doesn't really have yet. A book club that's about more than just finishing a book. A place to meet people (16+) , discover new genres, share ideas, and youth who wants to build genuine friendships. Over time, the plan is to create different book clubs and events for every kind of reader—from fantasy and romance to thrillers, classics, manga, non-fiction and more. We are a startup so right now we're looking for the first people who want to help shape the community from the ground up. If you've ever wished it was easier to meet like-minded people in Gloucester, spend less time scrolling, and more time doing something meaningful, we'd love to hear from you. Contact me for details.

"...we often mistake love for fireworks—for drama and dysfunction. But real love is very quiet, very still." Lesson learnt!

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Flowers for Algernon
by Daniel Keyes | Learn more and buy
It starts off with a story about Charlie Gordon who was born with a low IQ and is chosen to be a test subject for an experiment to raise IQ with it first being tested on a lab mouse, Algernon. Through the book we get to see him grow and change as he learns the world is crueler than he thought. He has a drive to learn and be better and it leads him to be smarter than even the scientists that put him though the experiment but at some point Algernon starts to deteriorate and the question is weather his will also happen to Charlie.

It’s such a great story of a world on the brink of extinction but the politics get in the way of saving it.

I particularly enjoy the literature and new journalism of the 1960s but I’m easily can turn my attention to non-fiction historical books and biography- especially cycling. Anthony (Newent)

Hi my name is Anthony. I’m probably best described as a distracted reader! I enjoy all sorts of genre but I am drawn to that of the 1960s counter culture so authors like Hunter S Thompson, Thomas Pynchon and Kurt Vonnegut. I also enjoy reading non fiction history and biographies especially cycling! Would welcome the added impetus of a book club to help my reading to return to its former level - I will one day finish Joyce’s Ulysses!!

Anthony recommends:

Inherent Vice

Well I finished it! But the usual mix of rich characters and narrative thread - darkly funny and poignantly observant.
