Jess (Monmouth)

I’m in my late 20s, I enjoy fantasy, folklore, romance, mythology, historical and would like to branch out a bit genre wise and meet new like-minded people around my age in my area. I’d also like to push myself to read more. Once a month would be good for me, I’m freelance and have an ever-changing schedule!

Jess recommends:

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

The magic system is really unique and I love the gothic themes and character dynamics. There is a romance plot but it’s not at the forefront of the story, the world building doesn’t feel contrived. It’s also the first of a duology so it doesn’t get bogged down in trying to drag the story out over 3-5 books like so many others have.

drbethhh31 (Newport)

I am an avid reader who gravitates toward immersive, character driven fiction, particularly fantasy and romance, with a strong preference for richly built worlds, high emotional stakes, and complex, morally grey characters. Reading is something I make time for consistently, not just for escapism but to explore themes of power, identity, relationships, and resilience through storytelling. I would like to join a book club because I value thoughtful discussion, hearing how the same story resonates differently with other readers, and being introduced to new authors or genres I might not otherwise choose. A book club feels like the ideal way to deepen my enjoyment of reading while connecting with others who share a genuine love for books.

Raine (Abergavenny)

Hi! I'm Raine and I'm 19 years old. I'm looking to join a book club to get more recommendations of books. I don't know how I would describe my favourite genre but I am into classic Russian literature from authors such as Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy. I am also looking to go into publishing in the future to hopefully become an editor!

Raine recommends:

The Trial by Franz Kafka

This is one of my favourite books! I love the hint to anti-existentialism and I really think it shows the flaws in societal convictions. It also demonstrates the imbalance of power between two beings and how it changes perspective of persecutors and victims

Amber (Newport)

hello! I'm not as much of a reader as I would like to be, but trying to get back into it. I am into psychological fiction and detective stories, but happy to read almost anything. Currently working through the Sherlock Holmes books and really enjoying them. Would love to meet and get to know some new people, and join a book club to get me back into books! 24 y/o, based in Newport

Amber recommends:

The Secret History
by Donna Tart | Buy this book
Love anything with a group of misfits, and weird interpersonal relationships. The characters are intentionally unlikeable but not to the point of annoyance. Its quite dark but not written in a way that feels to edgy or over-dramatic. Really great read!

I've come back to reading following a hiatus in which I was focusing on studying and my career. I'm in my 30s and looking to meet new people in the area, as I am somewhat new to Newport. I'm currently reading the Game of Thrones saga. Favourite book is probably Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
