Andrew (Oxford)

I am an artist, in my early 60s, and have been catching up on some of the great literature that I never read when I was younger. From The Odyssey to Ulysses, plus powerful newer writers such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and beautiful classics such as The Great Gatsby. Also occasional non-fiction, political or historical. I would like to find a small group to chew over books such as these, to be introduced to some new ideas……and to have a bit of fun in the process.

S (Witney)

I'm a girl in my late 20s that has lived in the area for just over 2 years and still do not know that many people. I love reading, mostly romance or romantasy, but will read other genres from time to time. Hoping to meet some like minded people, and make some friends. - S x

Brianne (Faringdon)

Hello! I work with kids and read a lot of YA and middle school fiction. I would love to find a group or a person to read books (fantasy, science fiction, self help, non fiction, mystery/thriller, fiction) and just discuss and talk about it. I would love to meet friends and connect!

Brianne recommends:

Devine Rivals
by Rebecca Ross | Buy this book
This is a YA but it is so beautifully written, you wouldn’t know that it was YA. It takes the horrors of war and guides the readers on a journey through hope, and truth. Its just so beautifully written. The chapters start off small but they get longer as you keep reading and I think that is part of its charm as you explore the two perspectives as one. Honestly cant rate this book highly enough.

Emma J (Witney)

I am a fan of historical fiction and books on social commentary. I'm not keen on crime, fantasy and/or romance novels ("penny dreadfuls"). I'm a middle-aged feminist, supportive of the exploration of EDI issues, particularly relating to mental health, the menopause, maternal separation and the LGBTQAIP+ community. I am a keen reader but I live on my own so would like the opportunity to engage with others on topics that are important to our society. I am currently reading, "Henry VIII, The Heart & The Crown" by Alison Weir and "The Art of Thinking Clearly" by Rolf Dobelli.

Emma J recommends:

confessions of a forty-something f##k up
by Potter, Alexandra | Buy this book
Told from a woman's perspective this is light-hearted, funny and deeply serious, all at the same time. As a 40-something f##k up, I found this extremely relatable. It's a fictional novel but it could just as easily be classed as a self-help book and it really helped my understand that I'm not a f##k up, I'm human and there is no text book for life. A very refreshing and uplifting read.

Jojo (Oxford)

Used to belong to an amazing independent book club which totally broadened my genres and books that I would have been ignored. Love fiction but not a fan of science fiction or fantasy. I am an avid reader and miss a local gathering to discuss a chosen book.

Avid reader and coffee drinker! Some of my favourite book genres are fiction, fantasy, mystery and anything adventure related. I'm always happy to learn about other genres and find more books to read.. especially if coffee is involved.

Witney young women's book club (working title!!!) (Witney)

As a young woman in my 20's living in Witney with a love of reading, I am keen to develop a face-to-face group for young women in their 20's to share favourite reads, discover new genres or authors, and to have a semi-regular space to collaborate over a love of reading!

Tom (Abingdon)

My recent choices seem a bit random when I list them out (The Trial, Lolita, Bono's autobiography and a Len Deighton novel) - but I love great or interesting writing, whatever it is! I'm at the tail end of my 40's and like to try new things - suddenly felt like sharing thoughts with others about books could be fun. Once a month would be about right.

Samantha Cash (Oxford)

My sister (28) just moved to Oxford, and I (31) will be staying with her for almost two months. We're looking for a fun, like-minded group to gather with and discuss our favorite books. Both of us are passionate readers and have enjoyed being part of several book clubs in the past. Our tastes are eclectic—everything from romance and fantasy to hard science, non-fiction, and horror. We’re always down for casual meetups at the pub, but we especially love the idea of themed events!

Samantha Cash recommends:

Tresa of the Emerald Sea
by Brandon Sanderson | Buy this book
This book is just a delight! If I had to give an elevator pitch it would be: the princess Bride, but Buttercup gets to be the rescuer… and also kinda Dr. Who. Synopsis: Tress leaves her peaceful island home to go on a pirate adventure to rescue the love of her life from an evil witch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
