Adam

Hi, I'm Adam and I'm looking to meet people who like to read. I'm getting a masters in publishing and creative writing at York St John and for the longest time I've been wanting to join a book club to be able to discuss the books I read. Usually I read Sci-Fi books but I also love Horror, Speculative Fiction, Literary Fiction, Classic Literature, and Modern Fiction.

They saved the world with the power of friendship! And also the movie made me cry over a god damn rock. I love that rock so much. It truly is, amaze amaze amaze.

I struggle to meet people and build friendships due to my neurodiversity, however I love to read and will read almost anything, I love the sense of escape and adventure it gives me and what better way to meet people than to join with others who love books as much as I do.

Sarah

I am an avid reader with a particular love for fantasy, sci-fi and thrillers, though I'll happily pick up pretty much any genre. I'm always up for a good book chat and would like to meet some fellow readers.

I am looking to discover new books. Love a thriller, cyber, sci-fi or intelligence theme.

Clean Account by M. B. Rokeley

This book isn’t Hollywood hacking. It’s precise, methodical and uncomfortably realistic. It centres on a hidden exploit buried deep in the dark web, and what follows feels less like fiction and more like something that could genuinely exist. Thoughtful, tense and quietly chilling.

I love crime and thrillers but I will read most books that have been recommended. I’ve always enjoyed talking about the books I’ve read and bonding over a love for reading.

Looking to fill my time with reading especially in the New Year! I enjoy an oxford comma, but more importantly mystery/crime/thrillers… and romance or historical fiction. If it sounds interesting, I’d give it a go.

Amelia

I am a voracious reader of essentially everything, though mostly fantasy adjacent and academic history. I am a university student on break who is going slightly insane with a lack of discussion and a desire to talk about things in detail with another human being. I don’t read much sci-fi or historical fiction, perhaps 20-40 books of each per year, out of 700-1000 total, (but plenty of historical fantasy), but I do enjoy both when well done (which I’m picky about with the historical fiction, courtesy of an academic love of daily life history and the history of trades and trade that mean I get my immersion broken very easily). I’d consider my favourite authors to be Prattchet, Kay, Jo Walton half the time (I either bounce off completely or it Does Things to me, there are two relateable books I’ve read in my life and she wrote both), and Sherwood smith slink less than half the time (mostly Time o Daughters, which I have yet to meet anyone else who has actually read. I don’t care for her most popular few, generally). I will however read pretty much anything, these are just the four that I end up rereading on loop when I’m not sure what else to do and that give me reliable book hangovers on the upteenth reread. The only genre I don’t read much at all is pure romance— I’ll only do it if it’s got a very strong alternate plot or if it’s not actually very romance based romance. This is purely me being very ace and very demiromantic and generally considering romance the least interesting character dynamic.

I read every day, focusing a lot on science fiction but venturing out to whatever seems an interesting read. I'm looking to broaden my social circles and shared interests are the way to go!

Short Reads Club

We exclusively read short stories, typically two per session. I started the club because I'm a huge fan of short stories. Often overlooked, they take so much discipline and craft to write well and there are some absolute gems out there waiting to be discovered, whether theyre timeless classics, or fresh, contemporary takes. We meet every second and fourth Sunday of the month, at the Amnesty Bookshop on Micklegate. You can find more details on the Meetup App by looking for Short Reads Club, York. It's great for people who don't have time to read a whole novel around their other commitments, or for anyone just getting back into reading, as well as those of us who just love short stories. Some of our past reads include Shirley Jackson, Isaac Asimov, Edna O'Brien, Albert Campus, Naomi Booth, F Scott Fitzgerald, Jhumpa Lahiri and more, and we will definitely be revisiting some of them again in the future. We read across genres, welcoming suggestions from members. We do our best to make the chosen stories freely accessible, as well as providing teas, coffees and biscuits (there is a small attendance fee to cover admin). All are welcome, but there are limited spaces, so please do sign up on Meetup, or feel free to get in touch.

I currently run a short story book group every second and fourth Sunday of the month, meeting at the Amnesty Bookshop on Micklegate. You can find more details on the Meetup App by looking for Short Reads Club, York. It's great for people who don't have time to read a whole novel around their other commitments, or for anyone just getting back into reading, as well as those of us who just love short stories. We read across genres, welcoming suggestions from members, and usually read two stories per session. I'm also considering starting a short story reading club specifically for stories that fall into the horror/weird fic/uncanny genres. If that would be of interest to you, please let me know.

Folk
by Zoë Gilbert | Learn more and buy
Whether you read this as a collection of short stories that share a setting, or as an unusual novel about a strange rural town perched between the sea and moors, its inhabitants, rituals, and secrets this wonderfully rich, dark book is perfect for fans of folk horror, the strange, and the weird.

Anna Davies

Lover of books, hoarder of stories, and devoted servant to a highly judgmental cat. When not buried in a novel, I can be found negotiating reading space with said feline, who firmly believes that all open books are, in fact, designated nap zones.

Anna Davies recommends:

Ada & Eddie
by Barry Harden | Learn more and buy
I received a preview copy of this engrossing thriller which I thought would interest you as it takes place in the North York Moors. Eddie is a humble, homeless man who lives in the moors, choosing to live among nature and animals rather than endure the cruelty of humans. He comes upon the body of a murdered young woman and reluctantly decides to bury her. Searching for tools in a nearby farmhouse, he meets Ada, a feisty widow who convinces him to report it to the authorities. Together they embark on a mission to discover the identity of the young woman, a pursuit that unwittingly brings them towards a collision course with political corruption, murder, and betrayal. The presence of a deeply entrenched mole within their group of confidants keeps the reader guessing their identity until the shocking finale. I couldn't put it down.

A collection of Ligotti’s fiction, predominantly concerned with corporate horror. I would liken it to the TV series Severance in tone and theme only. Not conventional horror - gore and monsters don’t seem to interest Ligotti.

I am an avid reader of weird fiction (Lovecraft, Thomas Ligotti, Robert Aickman, China Mieville). I also enjoy sci-fi - M John Harrison is a favourite - but I would like to expand my horizons and discuss with like minded people.

I would tell my younger self to read more; so take on my own advice. I’m looking forward to meeting people who regularly get last in the boundless world of books and upon their return, want to discuss their impressions.
