Frances (Whitby)

I live part of the year in Robin Hood's Bay and part of the year in Sheffield. I read a lot, mainly contemporary fiction - I follow women's writing particularly and I like reading novels that challenge me as well as ones that are just entertaining! I'd love to join a book group in Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay or Scarborough.

It's a crime story as well as a high school story - it's funny but it's also a challenging read that has things to say about gender and #metoo. I was really gripped by it. It's long but I liked that about it!

LeeRead (Whitby)

I’ve mainly read fantasy growing up from Rowling, Tolkien and Terry Prattchet but is I’m getting old I read more non fiction to study and for leisure I’m reading some classic writers like Fyodor Dostoevsky . Looking for a group who likes similar books which I can read with and discuss and dissect

Rach (Northallerton)

I usually enjoy reading but am struggling to find the time to sit down and enjoy a book currently, so I am thinking that joining a book group might help give me some dedicated reading time! Big fiction reader, mostly fantasy but happy to branch out!

Emily Towers (Richmond (North Yorkshire))

I love books full stop all and any, I truely believe reading and buying books are two separate hobbies - I rarely DNF a book - I also love to write.

Stephie (York)

I enjoy discussing (and learning about) history, folklore, literature, sociology, and all things supernatural and ghostly. I also like the idea that a book group would keep me accountable for reading the chosen materials. The internet has killed my attention span and I want it back!

Julien’s House
by Judith Hawkes | Buy this book
A dreamily atmospheric book about a pair of married psychical researchers who move into a reputedly haunted house in order to prove or disprove the local stories. The subtlety of the hauntings; the slow trickle of information that the wife receives without being aware—-because how many of us imagine that our most fleeting thoughts might be whispered into our subconscious by someone we can neither see with our eyes or hear with our ears? And the husband, desperately jealous of his wife’s off the charts psychic gifts and unable to perform sexually, suddenly finds himself sexually attracted to his wife again. Is it just the new environment? Is it some sort of physical, hormonal change in him? Is it an eighteen year old boy who was desperately in love with his young stepmother? No clear answers come as the tension between the couple and the intensity of the haunting build. The author’s extensive reading in early 20th century spiritualist literature adds an overlay of the scientifically presented romanticism of the time, and the changes in light and shadow throughout the day are almost a character themselves. A book so good that after having bought and read the paperback to death, I sought out and bought the hardcover.

Perny (Northallerton)

I am new(ish) to the area, and looking to meet people with similar interests to me. I love reading, a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Usually historical non-fiction, and fiction genres are varied, but I tend to stay away from horrors or psychological thrillers! Have missed being in a book club since I moved to the north east.
