CatoCally

Hi everyone! I am a huge bookworm and I’m about to embark on year 2 of an English Lit degree at age 33! I’d love to set up a book club where we can all share our love of reading and push outside of our comfort zone and explore different genres. )My personal faves are horror, lit fic and thrillers). I’d also love to connect with like minded people and make some new friends because let’s face it, it’s hard as a grown up. I’m local to Walsall/Wolverhampton area so drop me a message and we can go from there ☺️

Clare

I enjoy classic and cult literature, and also some non fiction, especially the OUP very short introduction series, and self development books. Some of my favourite writers: Solzhenitsyn, Graham Greene, HGWells. At the moment I'm rereading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. I would love to meet other like minded people, and have a chat over a coffee.

Ali

Hi, I'm 25 years old and just got back into reading. I used to read a lot of Crime and Fantasy Romance but this year have gotten into Science Fiction a lot more. I'm mainly interested in meeting new people across the West Midlands and finding new stories across any genre.

Ali recommends:

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

This is probably the best pure science fiction book I have read. Each pov is of a scope that is hard to get right and each for different reasons and yet Adrian has nailed it.
Babel by R.F. Kuang

I have only just finished this book so my opinion may yet change, but right now it feels like a wholly unique story. The subject matter itself, I've never seen so directly tackled in a "fantasy" like this, while the worldbuilding must've been hell to write. As a monolingual the use and manipulation of language in the book I was captivated by and really sets it apart from pretty much every other "magic" system I've ever seen before.
The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Two Towers
by J.R.R. Tolkien | Buy this book
An obvious literary masterpiece of a series, but what struck me finally reading the series was that despite TLOTR's reputation for its 1000s of years of history and detailed legendarium and all, the trilogy itself is a pretty well-flowing, not overly self-obsessed story. While a lot of modern fantasy has become obsessed with its own world, in these books the world is there to explore, but it's not getting in the way of the story itself. It makes it a much better read and makes it so much easier to appreciate the story and characters.

The "Narnia but bad" story is so common in fantasy but this is so great in a completely different way to the TV show.

Katie

Hi! I moved to the west midlands nearly a year ago and am looking to make friends and settle more into the area, and to have some external pressures to actually finish my books! I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy books best, but honestly I'm willing to give any genre a go at least once. Looking for other people to meet up with every so often to chat, knit and discuss book emotions with.

Amanda

Hi, I'm Amanda. I love reading, always have. I am open to reading anything and find my choices reflect how busy work is, sometimes a gritty thriller is great other times I just need a bit of fluff that doesn't require too many brain cells to work hard. I am also looking to expand my friendship groups with people who have similar interests.

Im Heather and I’m 34. I am and have always been an avid reader. I love any kind of book but very much into fantasy, fae, Sarah J Maas vibes at the moment. I also love a good who dunnit. I’ve wanted to join a book club for as long as I can remember, a new year seems the perfect time. I’d love to meet other bookish people to chat to as I don’t have many readers around me and to debrief after I finish a really good book!
