Katie (Wolverhampton)

I have recently re-discovered reading and have always loved the idea of a book club but never found anyone who'll commit with me! I love historical fiction (A Year of Marvellous Ways); dystopian fiction (The Hamdmsid's Tale); horror (Imaginary Friend); thrillers (can't think of an example!), and am open to other genres too! I'm looking for a proper book club (last one I tried just became a space for gossip and talk of TV series, lol), but also nothing that takes itself too seriously xxx

Katie recommends:

The Power Of Now
by Ekhart Tolle | Buy this book
This book gives such a great insight on the way we SHOULD be living conflicting with the common unhappiness many people nowadays suffer with. I truly believe that anyone can read this book and come out the last page a better, happier person

Avidreader (Birmingham)

I love reading all kinds of genres although classics are something that I haven’t delved into yet. I want to be with a group of people that can share their thoughts about books and get that same excitement from them that I experience when opening a book.

Sofiia (Birmingham)

I started reading actively around 8 months ago, when I read Fourth Wing. It was the start of my obsession with books, even though before that I still read a couple of books a year. I love fantasy, romantasy, romance books. I also enjoy reading detectives and psychological thrillers. For non-fiction I love psychiatry and neuroscience books, since they are related to my studies at the moment.

Sofiia recommends:

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Jenkins Reid | Buy this book
It was one of my 6 stars read this winter. I loved everything starting from the writing. The story altered my brain chemistry.

I've enjoyed reading but it's kind of slipped away from me recently. It would be good to meet with supportive people who'll encourage and/or challenge me to get stuck in

Crime and Punishment

Just read it! Such a transformative experience!
Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy
Death of Ivan Ilych
by Leo Tolstoy | Buy this book
“Julius Caesar is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caesar is mortal.” We often forget our own mortality. It’s seen as foreign in it’s relationship to ourselves. Tolstoy, awakened by his new spiritual views, wrestles with the idea of death and our greater significance beyond our earthly hedonism. We, just like Ivan Ilyich, have a greater purpose other than our work and social standing. Sometimes it’s the things that bring us joy that in death have no meaning. In order to truly understand this short story, we must relate it to ourselves. What do we live for? What do we truly love? Have we lived honest and good lives? Just as Ivan Ilyich did, we must release ourselves from our hatred and find meaning in our existence. This was my first introduction to Tolstoy and I hope to read more of his work. This was an incredible introspective read and greatly accessible and I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Singh (West Bromwich)

I've not read in decades, I don't seem to enjoy the things I've enjoyed for years, this has forced me to explore reading. I've picked up a controversial book, and I like to think I'm an impartial objective reader. I didn't like the book, but I'm continuing, and now feel really compelled to explain the hypocrisy, the truths in their story and general analysis of what I'm reading, I really need to offload what I've read. I would LOVE to discuss someone else's analysis of a book too! I think my theme is Non Fiction/Real life.

Trainspotting if it were written by Phillip K Dick. Set in the near future where the US government uses an epidemic as an excuse to brutally control the lives of its citizens.

Clare (Walsall)

I enjoy classic and cult literature, and also some non fiction, especially the OUP very short introduction series, and self development books. Some of my favourite writers: Solzhenitsyn, Graham Greene, HGWells. At the moment I'm rereading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. I would love to meet other like minded people, and have a chat over a coffee.

Becca46. (Birmingham)

I enjoy a wide variety of literature, at the moment I’m reading books by Cecelia Ahern. I think I’ve read all of her published books up to date! I also like to read non-fiction and am particularly interested in spiritual literature. I have read several thriller novels which I have enjoyed but I’m not really a fan of horror fiction books or fantasy fiction either. Although, I did read a little of the Harry Potter series (but I didn’t finish 🙃) I would love to meet with people who have a variety of literary interests. I feel that’s what makes a varied group. My other interests include jewellery making. Which I make using Gemstone Crystals, another interest of mine and I love animals. I volunteer at a local urban farm, although it’s a bit chilly at the moment!! (Feb) Ultimately, I would like to start my own book club/reading group, so if anyone would like to join me please get in touch @ (Facebook - Becca Reilly)
