Jamie (Birmingham)

I'm a student that recently started getting back into reading over that past year or so. I mostly enjoy reading classics and philosophical fiction (Hesse, Dostoyevsky, Sartre). Lately I've been trying to branch out more with Jane Eyre, Nineteen Eighty-Four and some others. I'd really like to meet other people to talk to about books and philosphy, and maybe even get some recommendations.

Demian by Hermann Hesse
Demian
by Hermann Hesse | Buy this book
Demian is an incredibly reflective and inspiring book. There is a good deal of philosophy regarding the world and people, but the real treasure is its numerous introspective moments and narratives that, for me, sets it apart from other philosophical works I've read. Demian is less the story of a boy trying to understand the world, and more of a boy trying to understand himself.

I am absolutely loving reading fantasy, romance and literary fiction! This year so far I have read Heavenly Bodies, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm (obviously!), the Magnolia Parks series and I have a long TBR list! Would love to meet some friends with similar interests and I would love to start a monthly meet up book club - probably a fantasy / romance fantasy club! If you are interested, share your email with me and I will help to get the ball rolling! I am 27 years old and work in marketing :)

James (Stourbridge)

As a writer in my spare time, I've always found immense joy in diving into the worlds created by others. Now, I'm eager to connect with fellow book lovers and explore those worlds together. I'm particularly drawn to thrillers – the suspense, the twists, the sheer adrenaline rush of a well-crafted mystery. Currently, I'm captivated by Frieda McFadden's work, and I'd love to discuss her intricate plots and compelling characters with like-minded readers. I'm hoping to find a book club where I can share my passion, discover new authors, and engage in lively discussions.

James recommends:

The HouseMaid
by Frieda McFadden | Buy this book
"The Housemaid" by Frieda McFadden isn't just a thriller; it's a masterclass in psychological suspense that will leave you breathless. From the very first page, McFadden expertly weaves a web of intrigue, drawing you into the seemingly perfect world of Nina and Andrew Winchester, only to slowly unravel its dark undercurrents. Millie, our titular housemaid, is a character of compelling contradictions. She's desperate, resourceful, and seemingly naive, yet her sharp observations and growing unease create a palpable sense of dread. McFadden’s brilliant use of first-person narration allows us to experience Millie’s world intimately, making every creak in the floorboards and every whispered conversation a jolt to the system. What truly elevates "The Housemaid" is its relentless pacing and ingenious plot twists. Just when you think you've figured it all out, McFadden throws another curveball, shattering your assumptions and propelling you deeper into the mystery. The tension is exquisitely crafted, building with each chapter until the explosive climax that will leave you reeling. This isn't just a simple tale of domestic suspense; it's a layered exploration of power, manipulation, and the secrets that lurk beneath the surface of seemingly perfect lives. McFadden’s writing is sharp, efficient, and utterly addictive. If you're looking for a thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end, "The Housemaid" is an absolute must-read. Prepare to be captivated and disturbed in the best possible way.

Maria (Birmingham)

Hi, my name is Maria and I’m a uni student. Growing up I’ve always loved reading and romance used to be my favourite genre until I started branching out. Recently I’ve been into thrillers and books with an anti-heroine / villain as the main lead. I like philosophical books aswell as books with a deeeper / hidden meaning. But I do still love a good romance :)) Looking for someone to talk to about books and other fun things!! <3

Katie (Wolverhampton)

I have recently re-discovered reading and have always loved the idea of a book club but never found anyone who'll commit with me! I love historical fiction (A Year of Marvellous Ways); dystopian fiction (The Hamdmsid's Tale); horror (Imaginary Friend); thrillers (can't think of an example!), and am open to other genres too! I'm looking for a proper book club (last one I tried just became a space for gossip and talk of TV series, lol), but also nothing that takes itself too seriously xxx

I love reading all kinds of genres although classics are something that I haven’t delved into yet. I want to be with a group of people that can share their thoughts about books and get that same excitement from them that I experience when opening a book.

I love fantasy, romantasy, romance books. I also enjoy reading detectives and psychological thrillers. For non-fiction I love psychiatry and neuroscience books, since they are related to my studies at the moment.

Just read it! Such a transformative experience!
Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy
Death of Ivan Ilych
by Leo Tolstoy | Buy this book
“Julius Caesar is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caesar is mortal.” We often forget our own mortality. It’s seen as foreign in it’s relationship to ourselves. Tolstoy, awakened by his new spiritual views, wrestles with the idea of death and our greater significance beyond our earthly hedonism. We, just like Ivan Ilyich, have a greater purpose other than our work and social standing. Sometimes it’s the things that bring us joy that in death have no meaning. In order to truly understand this short story, we must relate it to ourselves. What do we live for? What do we truly love? Have we lived honest and good lives? Just as Ivan Ilyich did, we must release ourselves from our hatred and find meaning in our existence. This was my first introduction to Tolstoy and I hope to read more of his work. This was an incredible introspective read and greatly accessible and I would highly recommend this to anyone.
