Very surprising if you’re not familiar with it. Both innit plot content, and in how wonderfully easy and compelling it is to read.

I’ve lived in Barrow for years and have always been an avid reader. I’d love to get to some like minded people who also love reading. I’ve always wanted to join an in person book club. I read every type of genre and am focused on finishing my TBR (eventually).

Gwenda (Workington)

Like the idea of reading books that I wouldn’t necessarily choose myself, to improve scope and interest. Also will enjoy discussing said book with others in informal situation.

Hi, I moved back to barrow in 2022 and have always been an avid reader. I like fantasy, thriller and romance books generally but I will read anything. I was part of a book club in my previous area so I’m looking to join something similar here.

My reading has lapsed of late due to the pressures of work and life (and social media) but I'm wanting to get back into it. Looking to meet new friends to discuss books and ideas. I'm interested in reading crime thrillers, politics, history and more

Karen (Kendal)

I enjoy most genres but when Im tired I prefer non fiction. I love Jane Austen, and historical novels. Just returned to UK after 20+ years in Australia so trying make connections. At the moment in an Air Bnb until we find our home - not necessarily in this area. Grew up on a farm and love all animals. Brought our 2 cats with us and they love to sit with me while I read.

An autobiography of an 'ordinary' man who believed he had a fortunate life despite experiencing Gallipoli and hardship in Western Australia. Certainly puts current expectations into perspective.

Claire (Gosforth)

A semi-retired teacher who loves to read. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends and socialising in small groups with a cup of tea and sometimes a sweet treat! I am currently devouring the DI Ryan books by LJ Ross or the Philippa Gregory books set in Tudor Times or the Wars of the Roses era. I would love to join a local book group to make new friends and to share new authors/genres I haven't tried before.

kubrick7 (Whitehaven)

Looking for new friends—ideally the kind who enjoy sitting across a table, talking through a book properly. Not just “what did you think?” but getting into the ideas, teasing out meaning, and maybe disagreeing a bit along the way. I’m a husband and a dad. Until recently I’d have said I was a die-hard introvert, but in a twist on the usual trend, the older I get, the more curious I’ve become about other people. I read with a pen in hand and tend to lean toward heavier nonfiction—philosophy, psychoanalysis, that kind of thing. But when fiction lands, it really lands. I’ve spent the last year focusing on books by women. Anne Brontë might be my favourite of the sisters—I think we share a dry sense of humour. My favourite detective is Inspector Morse. The most interesting novel you probably haven’t heard of? The Vorrh by Brian Catling. Strange, beautiful, and worth the time. Based in Whitehaven. If that sounds like your kind of conversation, get in touch.
