jordan (Uttoxeter)

Hiya, 23 year old here who have recently decided that she wanted to get into reading. I love romance like most other girls but I also love something psychologically challenging. I have been interested in some assassin stuff in the past but really I want to make friends who can get me out of the house and to expand my interests and have someone who I can talk to about my new found hobby. I have picked up a few books recently but it's been a challenge to start reading them because I'm a very unmotivated person. Due to mental health and physical issues I don't have much interest in anything but I've started to get back into old hobbies like painting and I know if I start reading I would love it like I used to in the past. I think I just need a push and having others recommend books or read them with me will be the push I need.

This book was the book to springboard me into the fantastic world of Sarah J Maas, it enabled me to completely escape the trials and tribulations of every day life and created a safe space in my head whci h was solely taken up by the characters within these books.

Benjamin (Lichfield)

My name is Benjamin. I am an English Literature graduate, now comms 'professional' and don't have many friends at 35. I would be interested in finding a group to talk about books. I read widely and gravitate towards literature/the kind of books that you would study at university, as opposed to crime, romance, etc. For example, I recently reread The Crystal World by J.G. Ballard; prior to that I read Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, and am about to start Ivan Goncharov's Oblomov.

Benjamin recommends:

Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates
Revolutionary Road

Possibly one of the most underrated American realist novels. This tells the deceptively simple story of two people who have dreams/ideals that they never fulfil, and details how their lives wane after the excitement of their youth, the realities of suburban living in the 50s and how we're not all destined for lives of importance.

Alex (Stoke-on-Trent)

I'm Alex, 24. I've been meaning to get back into reading for a while, alas I have struggled. Maybe if I meet some folks along the way I can figure it out though?

Alex recommends:

Closer Baby Closer by Savannah Brown
Closer Baby Closer
by Savannah Brown | Buy this book
It's a poetry collection about dating in the modern age. Best review I read described it as "terminally online". Savannah is great at taking moments that, should they happen to us would feel huge, and shrinking them down into broad and relatable terms. It's also just pretty vulnerable and I like that.

The Thursday Murder Club

Having read this during lockdown it really brought back my interest in reading, not having read for so long. It clicked with me massively being based down in Tonbridge Wells which I grew up not far from. The characters have their differences in personality which really come through on the pages. Every book in this series I've just adored!
Four Seasons in Japan by Nick Bradley
Four Seasons in Japan
by Nick Bradley | Buy this book
This is what I'm currently reading! About halfway through and really loving it so far. I've never had a huge interest in Japan but the writer really makes you care about these characters, whether it's the 'real life' characters or the 'book in a book' characters. It flows wonderfully and super easy to read.
