Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy
Death of Ivan Ilych

“Julius Caesar is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caesar is mortal.” We often forget our own mortality. It’s seen as foreign in it’s relationship to ourselves. Tolstoy, awakened by his new spiritual views, wrestles with the idea of death and our greater significance beyond our earthly hedonism. We, just like Ivan Ilyich, have a greater purpose other than our work and social standing. Sometimes it’s the things that bring us joy that in death have no meaning. In order to truly understand this short story, we must relate it to ourselves. What do we live for? What do we truly love? Have we lived honest and good lives? Just as Ivan Ilyich did, we must release ourselves from our hatred and find meaning in our existence. This was my first introduction to Tolstoy and I hope to read more of his work. This was an incredible introspective read and greatly accessible and I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Very few of my friends seem to read in the way I did as a child. Any text excites me but politics/history/science fiction are good go tos.

The premises of this book is genius, harrowing, intricate and heart-wrenching all at the same time. Sarah Waters' ability to create an atmosphere, invoke mystery and subvert expectation is second to none. The book is sapphic, supernatural and mysterious in nature, with a twist that will knock your socks off!

Hi! I’m a 17-year-old student who is obsessed with all kinds of literature. Sadly, many of my peers have passions in various other fields and I’d really love to meet people who are interested in the same things as me, which would allow me to try new things outside of my comfort zone. I hope to hear from you soon! :)

It’s a very cool romantic autobiographical book about how a high flying Buisness woman loses everything. A chance break in France with her friend completely changes her life.
