Karen

Hello, I'm a Creative Writing tutor who's just realised I only read work that students submit these days — that really needs to change. I'll give pretty much anything a go, but I particularly like anything spooky and Victorian (or Neo-Victorian.) If it's something ideally read by candlelight on Christmas Eve, I'm there. Looking forward to hearing from any like-minded ghost-story fans. (Online or in-person groups will be fine, but I'd need to meet up in Weston super Mare; I don't have transport.) All the best, Karen

As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann

This book is narrated by Jacob; essentially a villain, but modern readers will recognise he's at the mercy of a serious mental health problem. Being set during the English Civil War, Jacob breaks every rule going, and understands his character in religious terms; he thinks the devil is talking to him. The historical detail is incredible, the characters completely 3D, and when Jacob falls in love with a deserter/digger, the outcome is shattering. How Maria McCann manages to humanise a man who commits terrible acts I will never know. (It's worth mentioning that Jacob's crimes really are loathsome, and not for the faint-hearted!)

Hi, I’d like to meet people who love books and reading! I’m not a high brow reader, horror features highly on my most fave reads particularly Steven King, John Connolly and the like. 🤗

Hello, I have recently moved to the area and wanted a space where I could meet new people of all different ages and really get to know people whilst discussing a passion i’ve had from a very young age. I struggled to get into book clubs as i feel like it’s bracketed to a certain age or background. I want it to be inclusive to everyone and really build a community. please email me for any enquiries and if your too scared to join on your own bring a friend !! email address: uphillbookcircle@outlook.com

I moved to England (Weston-super-mare) recently and I found myself reading more. I am discovering nice fiction, non-fiction, biographies, philosophy, etc. books. I am interested in finding a book club, where we can meet to discuss about a specific book, make friends, enjoy some tea and a nice chat.

I’ve read this book 3 times now and it gets better each time I swear. I love Greek mythology retellings and this is by far my favourite.

Chris

I love reading and would like to extend my friendship group so a book club seems a good place to start. I like the classics, but also lots of modern stuff too. I’m not usually into non- fiction but have tried a few biographies and am happy to branch out a bit.

Miss Buncle’s Book

This was book about a “distressed gentlewoman” who writes a book for money and is then taken aback by the results was written in the 1930’s. The author is an astute observer of people and manners with a very light touch. It is very funny and I love the period detail as well as the humour.

Hi! I’ve just moved back to the West Country after 25 years away and I’m looking to make some new friends with shared interests. I tend to read non-fiction but I’m happy to read fiction, too - I’ll give most things a go. I’m a young-minded 51 year old who is very sociable but also respects boundaries. Hoping to find a nice book club to join or meet some people who would like to start one. 😊

My favourite fiction author and not the usual first recommendation but all her books are glorious. Funny, insightful and intelligently written - very engaging reads. I love classics - but also love more modern writers.
