Scott (Taunton)

Hi I'm Scott, living in Taunton. Currently reading (and writing) fantasy books, and would love to meet some like minded people to bond with over a mutual interest in fantasy.

Scott recommends:

The Amulet Of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
The Amulet Of Samarkand
by Jonathan Stroud | Buy this book
Despite technically being a YA novel, the author manages to portray a surprisingly nuanced view on British imperialism and classism. Stroud also manages in the same book to create one of the most hilarious characters I've had the pleasure of reading, the djinn Bartimaeus. I particularly enjoyed the footnotes during the Bartimaeus sections of the book, as his wisecracks and japes also manage to sneak their way into those. In short, politicial intrigue + an easy to follow writing style + a hilariously sassy spirit = quite the book.
Northern Lights
by Phillip Pullman | Buy this book
This is the book that got me into fantasy as a teenager. Pullman does a fantastic job at creating an alternate Earth that still feels fantastical, even though there are still many similarities with our own world. Despite many calling this children's literature, there are still some very heavy themes.

Paula (South Petherton)

I love to read and find increasingly that I am distracted and have less and less ability to read for longer periods of time. So the idea of a book club sharing the same text to come together, connect and chat will help me to bring more attention and focus to what is important.

Alison (Burnham-on-Sea)

I’m a young in December 60yr old and absolutely love reading , I suffer with complex PDSA and I am Dyslexic. Sadly I am finding I am isolating myself which has been impacting my daily life . I am actually a very confident fun person on meeting , I read different genres of books by different authors , and thought a local book club would help me find fellow book lovers off all ages and hopefully get me gently out of my comfort zone gaining new friendships. Perhaps on line or even better still over a cup off Tea/ coffee & yummy cake be it at each other houses or somewhere like sanders garden centre , we can chat laugh and analyze recommended our latest reads.

Alison recommends:

Karen (Weston-super-Mare)

Hello, I'm a Creative Writing tutor who's just realised I only read work that students submit these days — that really needs to change. I'll give pretty much anything a go, but I particularly like anything spooky and Victorian (or Neo-Victorian.) If it's something ideally read by candlelight on Christmas Eve, I'm there. Looking forward to hearing from any like-minded ghost-story fans. (Online or in-person groups will be fine, but I'd need to meet up in Weston super Mare; I don't have transport.) All the best, Karen

Karen recommends:

As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann
As Meat Loves Salt
by Maria McCann | Buy this book
This book is narrated by Jacob; essentially a villain, but modern readers will recognise he's at the mercy of a serious mental health problem. Being set during the English Civil War, Jacob breaks every rule going, and understands his character in religious terms; he thinks the devil is talking to him. The historical detail is incredible, the characters completely 3D, and when Jacob falls in love with a deserter/digger, the outcome is shattering. How Maria McCann manages to humanise a man who commits terrible acts I will never know. (It's worth mentioning that Jacob's crimes really are loathsome, and not for the faint-hearted!)

Sarah (Frome)

I'm an enthusiastic reader, almost 60. I like comic romance, especially historical, most historical fiction with a female perspective, and quirky off-beat books like Lessons in Chemistry. All time favourite author has to be Jane Austen. Also happy to read 20th century and older books. The best bit about reading is sharing thoughts on the book and the insights in it that resonate today.

Sarah recommends:

A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning Wroe
A Terrible Kindness
by Jo Browning Wroe | Buy this book
The story unravels in an unusual way which keeps the reader guessing, but also the dramatic heart of it is a story of a known incident from a different perspective, beautifully told.
