Thompsons fictionalised.autobiographical novel of his time working at a failing newspaper in Puerto Rico where its only safe to drink copious amounts of Rum is a hilarious story of paranoia, alienation and frustration.

I LOVE reading but sometimes I need a push. Having studied literature avidly at school and then at universities I love discussing books and finding hidden themes or new perspectives of classics and well-loved reads that help me fall in love with it all over again. My favourite authors are Wilbur Smith and Garth Nix with Dracula being my go-to favourite book of all time. I would love to find a local book club in Ashford, or if anyone is interested, I used to run one at university so happy to start one up!

The Burning Shore by Wilbur Smith

This is a great entry point for the Courtney Series by Wilbur Smith and was the first book I read that made me fall in love with Wilbur Smith's detailed and imaginative writing. Set mainly in Africa you follow the journey of Centaine - a young woman left to survive in the wilderness of Africa after a freak shipping accident during the first world war.

UK Murder Club

I'm retired, I have always loved reading. I particularly enjoy psychological thrillers by English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh authors. Would like to share views, comments and books with people of a similar disposition. Some of my favourite authors include: Claire Askew, Mark Billingham, M. W. Craven, Claire Douglas, M. J. Ford, Elly Griffiths, J. D. Kirk, Marion Todd and Tom Weaver to name just a few.

The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros

I never thought that Rebecca Yarros could write anything instead of amazing novels about dragons. However, when I read this historical Romance Novel I was transported into another world, full of young love, possibilities and heartbreak. The book takes place across two time frames, one, is a love story between Scarlett and Jamieson, a WW2 pilot experienced through letters left by the two lovers to be later on discovered by Scarlette's grand-daughter Georgia who strikes an unexpected friendship and romance with Noah, a writer hired to finish a book started by Scarlett. This book had me sobbing for hours as it portrays longing, loss and love so perfectly. Picking up this book will not be regretted.
