Belle

I like exploring genres, love a fantasy series. I prefer the romance to be subtle (eye contact, how scandalous). Books this year have been fantasy, crime, and science fiction. Mainly looking for recommendations, I am terrible at picking new reads.

Belle recommends:

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
Jurassic Park
by Michael Crichton | Buy this book
Better than the film, we get to know the characters and the goings on of the park in more depth. There is more to the story than 'get the power on and get off the island'.
The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
The Stormlight Archive
by Brandon Sanderson | Buy this book
A fantastical world with knights, kings and a science-based magic. Follows a handful of characters through war and discoveries. I cried, laughed, rolled my eyes and sighed at how long several of the books are... the first one takes 500 pages to get into it, but I can say with confidence it is very much worth it.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

First time reading a crime book, incredibly compelling. I have not watched the film but have been told the book was better so do what that information what you will. Loved the twists and turns but I will admit the ending was a little disappointing.

Debs

Hi I'm Debs, I love reading but sometimes need motivation to finish books or get into a certain genre! I love books on psychology, sci-fi, fantasy, biographies etc. My favourite book of all time is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. In my free time, I travel a lot, I like to cook, go for walks and hikes etc

AshRose

Hi, I’m Ashley, F, I love reading in my free time and I’m looking for readers like me to talk books or be part of a book club. I do a bit of writing as well (on online forums etc), but I am not published yet. I’m happy to meet virtually or in person anywhere around Hertfordshire on a regular basis. We can make it a fun day! The genres I love are; fantasy, dark romance, thriller, crime, horror, sci-fi, LGBT, classic.

May

Reading was something I enjoyed in the past, but for various reasons, I haven't been reading as much lately. I would love to reconnect with my favourite pastime again while meeting like-minded people. I love most fiction books except for horror and violence.

May recommends:

Angela’s Ashes
by Frank McCourt | Buy this book
A story of extreme hardship and suffering, in Brooklyn tenements and Limerick slums – too many children, too little money, his mother Angela barely coping as his father Malachy's drinking bouts constantly brings the family to the brink of disaster. It is a story of courage and survival against apparently overwhelming odds.

Bryony

Looking for a local book club covering a variety of genres

Bryony recommends:

Life after life by Kate Atkinson
Life after life
by Kate Atkinson | Buy this book
As always with Atkinson this book is beautifully written and combines some heart breaking subjects and the authors usual black humour. The book follows the life/ lives of Ursula who is re-born multiple times, each time learning from the mistakes of her previous life. A really unusual concept but brilliantly pulled off.

I am an eclectic reader and particularly enjoy books on or about travel, biographies, crime fiction, WWII history, photography, Greek and Roman classics, ... I would enjoy hearing how other readers interpret books, and would enjoy the social side of being a member of a bookclub.
