Flo (Reading)

Hello! I've recently moved to Reading and I'd love to join or create a book club. I read everything but I love literary fiction, magic realism, short stories, detective stories, ghost stories and anything a bit witchy. I'm hoping to meet new people in the area and would love to hear from you if you're feeling similarly bookish!

Flo recommends:

A Ghost in the Throat
by Doireann Ní Ghríofa | Buy this book
’This is a female text borne of guilt and desire, stitched to a soundtrack of cartoon nursery rhymes.’ ‘This is a female text and it is a tiny miracle that it even exists, as it does in this moment, lifted to another consciousness by the ordinary wonder of type. Ordinary, too, the ricochet of thought that swoops, now, from my body to yours.’ ‘This is a female text, written in the twenty-first century. How late it is. How much has changed. How little.’ ‘This is a female text, which is also a caoineadh: a dirge and a drudge-song, an anthem of praise, a chant and a keen, a lament and an echo, a chorus and a hymn. Join in.’ This is a strange and beautiful book about women telling stories of birth and death across centuries in Ireland. It's about motherhood and grief and longing and language. It is part memoir and part translation of an old Irish story from 1773. When I finished it I felt lucky to have found something so beautiful, and I also felt completely haunted by it.

Freya (Reading)

Hey! I’m Freya, I’m 19 and I have been wanting to join a book community for quite some time. I love books, especially detective stories or depraved literature, and always wanted to be part of a book club in school but just felt too shy to step out of my comfort zone. I’m looking for a group of people aged 18 and over as I’d like to broaden my social circle and hear from lots of different age groups.

Freya recommends:

The Secret Place by Tana French
The Secret Place
by Tana French | Buy this book
I love French’s centralisation of Dublin and her highly visual style that engrosses you in to the world of the Murder Squad series. However, I enjoyed this book the most as it presented the kinship between a group of young girls as almost magical in a way that resonated with me so much, increased by an actual supernatural element she involves that draws them closer. I would recommend to anyone even if they’re not in to detective novels, as I believe it’s accessible to people that are interested in lots of different genres.

Delaney (Slough)

Big fan of historical fiction types (Philippa Gregory, Ken Follett, etc) and narratives that explore events in other cultures/countries (the concentration camps, Chinese communist revolution, etc) in an easily accessible (i.e. easy to read!) manner, as it's like learning but fun! Love a bit of John Grisham, and dystopian realities (that aren't too heavy on the scifi) - just finally started Atwood's Oryx and Crake! I almost exclusively pick up my books from charity shops/car boots so tend to accumulate a decent range. Really enjoyed Dickens when I put the effort in but I've grown lazy and have a stack I've been putting off for years! Would love some morale support in facing some of these more challenging reads; as well as recommending and discussing more modern books :) I also have a huge interest in animal rights books if that's anyone else's jam too! Female, 31 and living in Slough :)

Delaney recommends:

World Wide X
by Max Brooks | Buy this book
Probably the first zombie book I've read (other than Cells by Stephen King, which I don't class as zombie genre - and also didn't rate!) despite being a huge consumer of zomb films and TV series. I'm choosing this as my book recommendation as it's the most recent read to hit my top 10 ever. Even if you aren't a horror fan, the portrayal of the global political consequences of the outbreak are fascinating. There's a ton of warfare info interwoven throughout too if you're familiar with war strategy and weapons (I'm not, but could just about follow along). On the lookout for more Max Brooks!

Ian (Bracknell)

I'm 27, I enjoy non-fiction and fiction, but I've been trying to get into more fiction recently. I love reading, and I used to be a part of book club in my previous job, but now I'm in search of fellow book nerds.

Hannah V (Reading)

I have recently got back into reading after a hiatus that coincided with having a baby. The baby I now 8 years old and I'm managing to read again! Would love to meet some new people, get out of my little bubble and read more and chat about reading. I enjoy 'easy' books that don't require too much brain power but also appreciate something a bit more meaty for time to time. Have just finished Shari Low's One Day with You, The Familiars was brilliant, really enjoying Mike Gayle's books, and the best book I may have ever read is Weyward by Emilia Hart.
