Interesting female lead

Beautiful almost poetic writing; really nostalgic; bit of magical realism; gprgous characters

This book gives such a great insight on the way we SHOULD be living conflicting with the common unhappiness many people nowadays suffer with. I truly believe that anyone can read this book and come out the last page a better, happier person

It was one of my 6 stars read this winter. I loved everything starting from the writing. The story altered my brain chemistry.

“Julius Caesar is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caesar is mortal.” We often forget our own mortality. It’s seen as foreign in it’s relationship to ourselves. Tolstoy, awakened by his new spiritual views, wrestles with the idea of death and our greater significance beyond our earthly hedonism. We, just like Ivan Ilyich, have a greater purpose other than our work and social standing. Sometimes it’s the things that bring us joy that in death have no meaning. In order to truly understand this short story, we must relate it to ourselves. What do we live for? What do we truly love? Have we lived honest and good lives? Just as Ivan Ilyich did, we must release ourselves from our hatred and find meaning in our existence. This was my first introduction to Tolstoy and I hope to read more of his work. This was an incredible introspective read and greatly accessible and I would highly recommend this to anyone.
