I’m a 67 year old retiree living alone and looking to expand my social circle. I love reading and my tastes are varied but I do love a good thriller / whodunnit. My most recent reads are The maid (Nita Prosse), The wind / Pinball (Murakami), The bullet that missed (Richard Osman) and I’m just starting on The sun does shine (Anthony Ray Hilton). I like to play scrabble and enjoy cryptic crosswords. I’m looking for a local group because I don’t drive. I’d like to meet up about once a month, I’d love to hear other peoples’ recommendations.

A man called Ove by Fredrik Backman

This is a short and easy read, but incredibly moving ( I genuinely cried whilst reading it ) . At the beginning Ove appears to be a grumpy interfering old busybody; a thoroughly unlikeable character who is disliked by his neighbours. However, as Backman develops the character and I learned more about his past I developed a great empathy and understanding of this complex character. Backman deals with the themes of loneliness, suicide and death with enormous skill and sensitivity, often with a delicious black humour. Ove’s life is turned around when a new neighbour moves in; a young single mum with a boisterous child; everything that Ove would ordinarily disapprove of, and the development of their relationship is joyously satisfying . In my opinion this book is a little masterpiece. I have recommended/ given a copy to all my family and friends and, without exception, they have all loved it.

Hello, I’m a long time retired royal naval officer though I don’t tell people as my career was not what people imagine. I’m now in my 81st year and still enjoy reading a broad range of books from well known authors as well as some of the more obscure ones, recent reads Include The three body problem, and currently a Jeffery Archer selection. A widower and partially disabled I no longer drive but can get around Middlewich on a scooter. I am interested in meeting up with people for conversation and sharing other opinions.
