Maia (Warrington)

Hi, I’m a lover of all types of romance book and have recently gotten into fantasy and a bit of horror. I don’t really have anyone to talk about books with. I would love to have people to debrief and discuss opinions about a book with :)

Krys (Warrington)

I want to meet new people, and get to share the joy of entertaining and interesting books together. I've never been much of a reader, but I know that being in a club would motivate me to read more. I appreciate self help and biographies, however iam open to fiction.

Callum (Runcorn)

I'm 24, male. Bit of a loner however I'm happy with that as I hate the idea of being around people you don't want to be around. I love reading, so the next logical step was to find a book club.

Callum recommends:

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Zott is the strongest character I've ever read about. What makes her strong is the fact she is proudly smart and in her times, this was unacceptable. She did not give two f*cks tho. She fights a war on prejudice and sexism by just being herself and refusing to accept the "norm".

Nicola Ashbrook (Northwich)

Not sure if this is allowed but I’m an author and my debut novel is perfect for book clubs! As an author with a small, independent press, it’s tricky to connect your book with the right audience so I thought this might be a good forum. I’m also an avid reader and always looking for recommendations.

Nicola Ashbrook recommends:

The Dispensary
by Nicola Ashbrook | Buy this book
With its blend of romance, mystery and a sprinkling of magical realism, this book is a cosy read, perfect for fans of Japanese or Korean literature like Dallergut Dream Department store. With its highly unusual setting ( a mysterious prescription-dispensing facility) and range of discussable issues, it’s well-suited as a book club choice. If you read contemporary fiction like Lessons in Chemistry, anything by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Celeste Ng or Sarah Winman, you might enjoy The Dispensary.

Pauline (Middlewich)

I’m a 67 year old retiree living alone and looking to expand my social circle. I love reading and my tastes are varied but I do love a good thriller / whodunnit. My most recent reads are The maid (Nita Prosse), The wind / Pinball (Murakami), The bullet that missed (Richard Osman) and I’m just starting on The sun does shine (Anthony Ray Hilton). I like to play scrabble and enjoy cryptic crosswords. I’m looking for a local group because I don’t drive. I’d like to meet up about once a month, I’d love to hear other peoples’ recommendations.

Pauline recommends:

A man called Ove by Fredrik Backman
A man called Ove
by Fredrik Backman | Buy this book
This is a short and easy read, but incredibly moving ( I genuinely cried whilst reading it ) . At the beginning Ove appears to be a grumpy interfering old busybody; a thoroughly unlikeable character who is disliked by his neighbours. However, as Backman develops the character and I learned more about his past I developed a great empathy and understanding of this complex character. Backman deals with the themes of loneliness, suicide and death with enormous skill and sensitivity, often with a delicious black humour. Ove’s life is turned around when a new neighbour moves in; a young single mum with a boisterous child; everything that Ove would ordinarily disapprove of, and the development of their relationship is joyously satisfying . In my opinion this book is a little masterpiece. I have recommended/ given a copy to all my family and friends and, without exception, they have all loved it.

I need to get back into a previous passion. I enjoy strong female characters but happy to broaden my horizons. Also building new friendships would be an added bonus.

Grainne McGovern-Scott (Chester)

I’m a newly Amazon-published author living in Chester. My novel Only the Lonely would make the perfect book club book.

Grainne McGovern-Scott recommends:

Only the Lonely
by Gráinne McGovern-Scott | Buy this book
It’s full of humour, intrigue and emotion. It forces the reader to ponder what they would do in their position. 3 friends retired to a mobile home park overlooking the rugged bay in Trillinick north Cornwall. Life is steady until one of them makes an incredible beach discovery. So the story begins.
