Stu (Basingstoke)

So, there seems to be a proliferation of people looking to join clubs (myself included) near to me, with a distinct lack of options. With this in mind I’m considering (underlined, in bold AND italics) starting one. I’ll list my preferences below and if anyone is genuinely interested please feel free to contact me via this site. Once I gauge interest I’ll consider (underlined, in bold AND italics) whether or not to bite the bullet and actually set one up. Feel free to include your preferences in any replies. My preferences: Once a month. In person. In a public place. Contemporary fiction (although open to ALL suggestions on any subjects). Round Robin of book selection. Book selector chairs the discussion at meeting. Errrr… can’t think of anything else at present. So please feel free to contact me via this site. My first reply will include my email address. Lastly, I can assure you all that I’m not a lunatic (and yes, I know that’s what a lunatic would say but what’s a guy supposed to do??).

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

A rollicking historical romp of betrayal, revenge and regret. What’s not to love?

Hayley (Brockenhurst)

Recently moved to the New Milton area and would love to join a Book Club to meet like minded people who also love reading and to share recommendations. I enjoy a wide range of genres (depending on my mood and time of year - light hearted fiction when on holiday!) but particularly psychological thrillers, autobiography, crime and stories involving family relationships.

Matthew (Romsey)

I'm a bit of a haphazard academic and spend most of my time between working outdoors on trees! Really looking to expand my reading list and meet some like minded people. Reading tastes range from Irvine Welsh to Tom Sharpe and everything in between - I quite like the macabre and dark humour.

Matthew recommends:

Clockwork orange by Anthony Burgess
Clockwork orange
by Anthony Burgess | Buy this book
It's written in a made up language that is loosely based on Russian. Your brain adapts to it quite quickly, and it ties in with the dystopian theme of the book.
Porterhouse blue by Tom Sharpe
Porterhouse blue
by Tom Sharpe | Buy this book
Its a dark comic farce that plumbs the depths of archaic English institutions in a way that is funny without relying on satire.

Claire (Hook)

I love popular science, science fiction, fantasy, and thrillers but I'm happy to read anything if it's interesting and well-written. It would be great to meet some Hook locals and talk about books!

This book blows your mind over and over again. It;s filled with amazing examples of the myriad of ways different species have evolved to sense the world, and how the way that we perceive what's around us shapes us.

VGB (Fleet)

My name is Vernon Barnes. Why a book group? To discuss books with people with similar outlooks. I like most fiction, especially British 19th century, but joining a book club will help broaden my range of 20th c. reading.

Joseph (Portsmouth)

I'm a mood reader and can be quite shy; hoping to make friends with people, find new books to read and just generally socialise with someone; I don't always connect with people very well but hoping to change this - small groups are my preference and quieter environments allow me to open up more. I like most things circumstantially. I've read most works by Plutarch and Tactics but I have read other works like Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and John Steinbech as well as Plato and Kafka (and more); I am open to most ideas.

Joseph recommends:

Easy of Eden
by John Steinbech | Buy this book
I cannot quite explain this book truly but in me it elicited and awful array of emotions of mostly sadness and upset and without spoilers, granted me further understanding of the psychological underpinnings of humans which were found growing here in this book, finally relating to my experience -- some of the scenes made me choke. --; this book in every moment paints the awful loneliness and naive imbecility of humanity and it's shattering disillusionment and final self-destruction from it's black state of despair. --- If this book paints such an image because I am not this gloomy!

Bex (Fareham)

I never really liked reading while in my school years, but once that finished, I started reading and did not stop until I had 100 books read in one year. I enjoy different styles of genres, but tend to stick to fiction. I’m looking forward to meet with groups of people that enjoy storytelling as much as reading.

Bex recommends:

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
The Girl on the Train
by Paula Hawkins | Buy this book
It’s a whodunnit, but with a twist. The Girl on the Train is less about clever clues and more about unreliable perspectives, psychological tension, and slowly uncovering the truth.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz
by Heather Morris | Buy this book
Based on the true story of Holocaust survivor Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov, it portrays his experiences as the tattooist at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Highly emotional book.

Michael (Basingstoke)

I’m drawn to darker, offbeat literary fiction — the kind of books that are a little strange, psychologically intense, or stylistically ambitious. I love stories that spark discussion and sit with you long after you’ve finished them. I’m not a literary expert by any means, but I’d really like to develop a more critical eye and dig deeper into what makes a book work. Mostly, I’m hoping to find thoughtful, like-minded people who enjoy both good conversation and the social side of reading.
