Mark in Hook (Hook)

I like fiction and non- fiction, poetry, literature and drama. I tutor English literature and language but try to push myself to read new authors and genres as well as my favourites. These include Hilary Mantel, John Irving and Steinbeck, Benjamin Myers, WG Sebald, Sickens, Auden, Armitage...in fact any writer that writes well. Currently on the reading pile is Francis Spurford, Michael Igniateff and right now, bought today, John Lewis Stempel's , ' England, a natural history. ' I'd like to share my enthusiasm for places visited and explore new places with readers of whatever interest and persuasion. I work in local Government building social housing, follow politics and current affairs and have a sizeable library in my garden office, acquired when the pandemic changed our working life routines for ever.

The intensity of the gentleness ofvthe writing, generous in its sharing of an age of watching, thinking and writing, beautifully phrased, accessible and often leaving a lasting feeling of knowing the writer
The Russian Album
by Michael Igniateff | Buy this book
A very personal and articulate insight into a lost generation of Rissians from the 19th and 20th century, full of larger than life characters who were real, impressive and ultimately sad in their demise

Maria (Aldershot)

I love the suggestions made by others in a book club that lead me to read books I might not have picked up. Then hearing what others got out of reading books that give new insights. Also to meet people and enjoy a social event.

Emily (Basingstoke)

I'm 26 and wish to find like-minded, book loving friends in my area. I'm an introvert by nature but connecting with people who have similar interests like reading will certainly help to bring me out of my shell. I love all kinds of fiction including romance, historical fiction & fantasy.

I couldn’t put this book down. Combined two of my favourite things - multiple povs and set in different time periods! Balanced darker themes, wit and magical realism really well. The short chapters certainly made it a page turner.

Jessie (Winchester)

Charity worker, mother of 2, ex-teacher, loves travelling but doesn't get enough opportunity to do so any more! Busy trying to stay on top of taking care of myself and family. Reading is a great pleasure and I enjoy sharing ideas on books read with like-minded people. I moved to Hampshire from Bristol where I was a member of a lively book group and I'd like to find something similar locally. I enjoy historical and dystopian fiction, character-led novels, biographies and a range of nonfiction.

Jessie recommends:

A page turner, set in a near future that is very recognisable with well rounded characters, a wide-ranging amount of scientific and archeological speculation and an unsettling plot twist. Beautifully written.

Lesley (Lyndhurst)

Hi, I live in Dibden Purlieu on the edge of the New Forest. I’ve recently retired from working in positions with extensive travel. I haven’t been home long enough to meet people with similar interests. I have always loved reading and now I have the time to read more fiction. Particularly love thrillers, whodunnits, etc. Anything that gets the brain going with twists and turns. I’m happy to travel throughout the New Forest. Please contact me if you’re already part of a reading group open to new members or would like to start a new reading group and making like-minded friends.
