Joseph (Portsmouth)

I'm a mood reader and can be quite shy; hoping to make friends with people, find new books to read and just generally socialise with someone; I don't always connect with people very well but hoping to change this - small groups are my preference and quieter environments allow me to open up more. I like most things circumstantially. I've read most works by Plutarch and Tactics but I have read other works like Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and John Steinbech as well as Plato and Kafka (and more); I am open to most ideas.

Joseph recommends:

Easy of Eden
by John Steinbech | Buy this book
I cannot quite explain this book truly but in me it elicited and awful array of emotions of mostly sadness and upset and without spoilers, granted me further understanding of the psychological underpinnings of humans which were found growing here in this book, finally relating to my experience -- some of the scenes made me choke. --; this book in every moment paints the awful loneliness and naive imbecility of humanity and it's shattering disillusionment and final self-destruction from it's black state of despair. --- If this book paints such an image because I am not this gloomy!

Bex (Fareham)

I never really liked reading while in my school years, but once that finished, I started reading and did not stop until I had 100 books read in one year. I enjoy different styles of genres, but tend to stick to fiction. I’m looking forward to meet with groups of people that enjoy storytelling as much as reading.

Bex recommends:

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
The Girl on the Train
by Paula Hawkins | Buy this book
It’s a whodunnit, but with a twist. The Girl on the Train is less about clever clues and more about unreliable perspectives, psychological tension, and slowly uncovering the truth.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz
by Heather Morris | Buy this book
Based on the true story of Holocaust survivor Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov, it portrays his experiences as the tattooist at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Highly emotional book.

Michael (Basingstoke)

I’m drawn to darker, offbeat literary fiction — the kind of books that are a little strange, psychologically intense, or stylistically ambitious. I love stories that spark discussion and sit with you long after you’ve finished them. I’m not a literary expert by any means, but I’d really like to develop a more critical eye and dig deeper into what makes a book work. Mostly, I’m hoping to find thoughtful, like-minded people who enjoy both good conversation and the social side of reading.

As always, there is a real reason to pick up a good classic- a film adaptation. Don’t watch the film just be reminded that it’s a sad story about a person that truly loved someone
