Bookgal85 (Orpington)

I’m a working Mum (late night reader!), 39 going on 20 and am mainly into dystopian, gothic horror/thriller, historical and comedy. Want to find a book group in the Bromley area.

Bookgal85 recommends:

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

Unpopular opinion but I preferred this book to the first - obviously you do need to have read The Handmaid’s Tale for The Testaments to make sense, and even better if you’ve seen the TV series after the first book, as an in-between filling.
Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

Gritty realism with a backdrop of 1980s Glasgow, this book tells the story of family dramas and the inner torment of a young boy growing up in chaos.

A young female assassin called Celaena Sardothien, she attempts to win her freedom back and accidentally makes friends along the way but there are many secrets in her past she can’t ignore. The best fantasy series I’ve read, amazing character development and world building as well as a thrilling story and lots of intense battles!
Divine Rivals by Rebecca ross

Two unlikely friends write to each other with the help of their magical typewriters in a time of war. A mixture of fantasy and world war 1, this was an interesting read and I was immediately immersed in the world and its lore I fell in love with Iris and Roman!

Beth (Beckenham)

I am an Australian who moved to the UK 10 years ago with my family. We moved to Beckenham a year ago and I am looking to immerse myself in the community. I enjoy getting lost in books and have been told by work colleagues about the pleasures of being in a book club, so I have decided the timing is right. Kindest Beth Anderson

Loz (Deal)

Hello I've been doing a lot of studying recently and would love to read for pleasure again. I like a book club as it broadens my reading and I delve into books I might not normally have selected for myself. I'd also like to meet more people and additionally ensure I carve out some regular time for me to do something that helps create and maintain a better work/life balance. I'm in my 50s and would rather a daytime club as I become a bit of a hermit during GMT hours!

Shirley (Broadstairs)

I have been an avid reader from childhood onwards. I read for pleasure and information but I am rarely without a book to indulge myself in. I am retired from nursing for 6 years now and would really like to make new friends through a shared interest, to talk about books and socialise face to face.

Kate (Deal)

I have always been an avid reader and have been known to read the back of cereal packets if that’s all there is! Still reading anything and everything at 78 I prefer contemporary fiction but like to be challenged by other genres as I was in my previous book club now sadly defunct since COVID

Kate recommends:

The Map of Love by Adhaf Souief
