Hi I’m Jason, I’ve only just got into reading this year and have been reading the works of John Steinbeck as well as George Orwell and Philip K Dick who have written social novels and sci-fi respectively. I’ve also read books based on war which I find extremely interesting. Happy to recommend books and have them recommended

Hello, I've just started to take an interest in literature again after spending few years studying, so preoccupied with the dryness of academia. Books that have stood out and remained in my memory from past readings have been strange mix of Herman Hesse, Dostoevsky, Irvine Welsh, and philosophical things. I'm by no means confined to any particular genre, and open to reading new/ unfamiliar areas, and things less intense. It might be good to meet new people, read some things collectively, and talk about books and other topics if and when they come up.

I'm open to reading most genres (not a fan of romance though). I especially love literature that takes me to places and cultures I've not experienced in real life. Would be interested in meeting for monthly/fortnightly book discussion, online or in-person (though as a full-time wheelchair-user I need accessible venues which are limited in my area).

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

Representation of young lesbian life and love in a time and culture that isn't ready to accept these. Deals with familial rejection and how minoritised groups go about community-building and mutual aid in the face of prejudice and systemic discrimination. Super sympathetic protagonist you find yourself rooting for!

The Book Was Better

Hey, I’m Mollie and I’m the host of TBWB - a book club based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Each month we choose a book from a pot of picks from our members, then meet up on the last Saturday morning for coffee to discuss it (and everything inbetween!). We are a social bunch of avid readers, ages ranging from 25-60 and we read a wide range of genres. Find us on Instagram and feel free to message with any questions @tbwbclub 📖 ⭐️

Alia

30 year old philosophy and english grad. Just moved to West Yorkshire. Currently in love with the magical realism of Marquez's work and the clarity of Edward Said. Looking for people to challenge my interpretations and to make sure I finish the books I start! Note: I have set up a group on Meetup called Global South meets West Yorkshire.

This is book is so colorful and immersive, so full of smells and textures, yet at the same time so dark. It is a very personal insight into the lives of those who opposed tyranny in Trujillo's Dominican Republic. Both tragic and inspiring.

Oliver

Hello, I'm Oliver, 32 and live in Halifax. I am quite recently an avid book reader! I find non fictional books very interesting, in particular books like, Sapiens, Prisoners of Geography, the Silk Roads. I am very open minded in exploring other genres and would love to meet/connect with other avid readers :)

Oliver recommends:

The Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall

This book is great as it opened my eyes and mind to a world I've never really considered. How geography has played such a huge role in the power houses becoming power houses, and how certain countries are blessed and cursed by their geography. It's extremely educational and it's helped me see the world for what it is.

I love fantasy, translated fiction, and horror. Recently gotten obsessed with anything to do with feminism, also. I just want to meet new people and branch out of my comfort zone. \^^/

Parzival

Hi! I have been a member of book clubs through work for a few years but due to moving jobs and more recently the members gradually dropping out due to other commitments, I am looking to join or start a book club for science fiction and fantasy fans in my area as I think this genre is often overlooked or not as popular as other genres of books. A monthly book club would be ideal but open to other time frames as well.

Parzival recommends:

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

This is the first book of a series and the main character “Murderbot” is one of the best characters in any book series. Loads of heart, funny, and great action.
Dune by Frank Herbert
Dune
by Frank Herbert | Buy this book
The first book to win both the Nebula and Hugo award. Opened up the genre to include more cerebral matters and influenced all science fiction since its release in the 60s. Fantastic story, brilliant world building, complex relationships and copious amounts of life extending drugs.
The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake
The Atlas Six
by Olivie Blake | Buy this book
First of a recently completed trilogy about a world where magic societies, schools, institutions operate on both sides of the law. Six people are chosen to study and promised power, wealth among other things but they have to work together for a common goal…the kicker, one must die!
Empire of the Damned
by Jay Kristoff | Buy this book
Mon dieu, I love reading these stories! The tension barely lifts thoughtout the nearly 700 pages! Kristoff can write thrillers, fantasy, action, erotica and horror better than anyone I have read! Longue vie ‘la demoiselle du graal!’

New to Northowram from Buckinghamshire, I’d like to find new friends. I like detective novels, but am open to suggestions. My current ‘find’ is Mick Herron. In my previous book club, we all read whatever we liked, and then met up every 6 weeks to discuss, and perhaps recommend.
