Josie (Reading)

Hi I'm Josie, I'm 33 and I recently moved to Reading with my husband and kids. I love reading a wide variety of books, but my favourite genres are fantasy, cozy crime and historical. I also really love crafting. I'm looking to make new friends and talk about books over coffees.

Josie recommends:

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

I love this fantasy book as it uses medieval Spain and the Middle East to form an interesting and different magical world. Taylor also uses this space to discuss the aftermath of violent revolution on all of its survivors.

I love Lizzie as a character, I feel like she is relatable, even with the couple hundred time gap since publication. I love her lack of dependancy on a man and I feel like that is both bold and brave for that time. I feel like you could also take parts of the story from Austen's life in itself which is admirable.

Emilia (Reading)

I love books and I love seeing where a story can take you. My genre is novels with interesting and well structured characters that you discover bit by bit. I am bilingual and I am intrigued by the use of words and how they can be used to convey an image or a feeling.

Sharon (Reading)

Hello - I'm Sharon - I have just moved from Snowdonia back to Lower Earley where I went to school (Loddon and Maiden Erlegh). I was a member of a book club in Dolgellau. I didn't know at the time I joined the club that the members were infamous for meeting every two weeks, choosing books, not reading them and meeting again two weeks later to discuss them. It took me one round of that to realise 'things weren't quite how they seemed at first'.... I'm looking for brilliant minds, love of heritage, how novels work, how protagonists are created - and therefore how baddies, heroes, comedy parts, educator characters - everything.. I've got loads of energy to bring and as I am starting my new life again (suddenly single and back where I started) - finding a 'team' of such I can be part of would be amazing. I also have a mischievous sense of humour and am very well travelled. I love people, cakes, coffee, rambling, history, dance, singing, wine and chips :)

Sharon recommends:

Aristotle and an Aardvark Go to Washington
by Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein | Learn more and buy
These brilliant comedians and authors aren't falling for politico flim-flam and arrive to save the world from double-speak, flat writing and worthless words. I kept breaking out into proper laughing on the train. The guy next to me had ordered it to collect from Waterstones before we pulled into Paddington. It will make you put your head in your hands, smile, groan and roll your eyes - but most importantly - it is seriously funny.

Riya (Reading)

Hello! I'm 24 and live in Reading. I haven't finished a book in ages and would love to get into reading. These days, I lean more toward Christian and Catholic content. However, I also enjoy reading about history and adventure, such as The Secret Letters of the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari or The Alchemist. I used to read a lot of crime and horror in high school, but now I can't seem to consume scary or crime-related content without having nightmares. Besides history and adventure, I'm keen on reading about science, politics, economics, and sociology. My goal is to join a book club to stay accountable and make reading a habit.
