Apart from enjoying the authors style, (crisp, sharp and precise), I think he conjures up the atmosphere of the period and location very effectively. It is the kind of book that allows you to lose yourself in the story and characters so that you don't consciously think about what you are reading you just feel immersed in the plot.

My favourite fiction author and not the usual first recommendation but all her books are glorious. Funny, insightful and intelligently written - very engaging reads. I love classics - but also love more modern writers.
