Emma (Braintree)

Hi, I'm Emma, 19 years old. I moved to the area about a year ago and have done nothing but work, so I'm looking for a few friendly faces to talk about books with :) I usually read fantasy, historical fiction and magical realism, but honestly as long as the writing is to my taste I don't mind genres. I've been loving queer and religious themes recently

it's sooo long, but really dives into the lives and changing views of each of the characters, something i often miss in contemporary fiction. The author explores the different mindsets of the siblings and parents of an american family, where the dad is a parish leader. obviously they all have a strong connection with religion and eachother. We follow them for a good few years, and i loved reading this because it really shows how people change. Even though they are siblings, growing up in the same house, they lead such different lives.

What I find most amazing about this book is the way the writer writes in first person, and goes in-between two characters. I enjoy how he makes them so different yet so similar. And how he shows their separate lives to them meeting during a crime scene. It's so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. The writer really thought hard how to put this story together and wanted it to me something people would remember.

30-something mum escaping toddler tantrums by hiding in books. Mainly into twisty psychological thrillers, with a side of romance. Not a fantasy girlie — please don’t come for me 😅

Arireadsalot (Ilford)

I love reading all kinds of genres — psychological thrillers, murder mysteries, and a good old rom-com are definitely my go to, but honestly, I’m up for reading a bit of everything. I’m always looking for new recommendations and love chatting about books with people who are just as into reading. think it’ll be fun to share thoughts, hear different perspectives, and just be part of a community that appreciates a good story!

But the fan art is sooo good!) and I'm loving every minute of these books, (not even sorry ha!) and would lovvvvve for other like minded people to chat with, my social life consists of reading in my dressing gown like a grannie giggling to the plot lines and there are times I wish I had someone/a group to giggle with and swoon with and scream passionately about plot lines with! Looking for a book club maybe or online connections! I just moved back to the area and it would be great to do something social

peter (Braintree)

Have recently moved to Essex - good to get acquainted with folk who love books. I try to alternate novels with non-fiction - have recently read "Golden Hill" by Spufford which is top notch historical fiction. Am also keen on aviation, steam railways, military history. Braintree Library has a book group (according to the Net) but crime which is not a genre I read much.

peter recommends:

England, Their England by A G MacDonell

The author is wonderfully sarcastic about the WW1 Western Front in the opening chapter which sets up the premise of what follows. There are some very funny and witty passages. It is "of its time" but a classic I think. A bit Kingsley Amis or P G Wodehouse in tone.
