Sarah (Braintree)

New chapter, new town—anyone else believe the best stories start with a great setting? 📚 I’m 30 and just moved to Braintree, hoping to meet fellow book lovers who enjoy a good chat about what they’re reading. Whether it’s a thriller that keeps you turning pages past midnight or a story that just gets you, I’m all in. Let’s get lost in a good book.

Sarah recommends:

The Alchemist
by Paulo Coehlo | Buy this book
If you haven’t read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho yet, consider this your sign. It’s a simple story with a quietly powerful message: sometimes the universe nudges us toward exactly where we’re meant to be—if we’re paying attention. This book reminded me that wonder isn’t something we outgrow—it’s something we return to when we start listening. Highly recommend for anyone who loves meaningful stories with a touch of magic (and no, not the wand-waving kind).

Erin (Brentwood)

I’m 24 and just moved to the area - I studied literature (although you probably wouldn’t be able to tell from my taste in books) and want to make some friends ! My most recent read was Butter by Asako Yuzuki and I’m currently reading The Book of Witching by C.J Cooke. I read across many genres (although I have a soft spot for anything Victorian) so I’m happy to chat to anyone :) and we can exchange goodreads if you have it !

Tony (Leigh-on-Sea)

I am 66 and have a wide range of books I enjoy reading. Crime and thrillers are a good genre to chill out to, but I also like novels. My favourite recent books are The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Reid Jenkins, which is simply a novel, and the First 15 Lives of Harry August by Claire North, which is quite sci-fi. I don’t only read books with numbers in the title… Being able to meet up fortnightly or monthly would be nice.

Tony recommends:

The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Reid Jenkins | Buy this book
A clever book and goes at a nice pace. The author also wrote Daisy and the Six (another number in the title) which I also really enjoyed
The First 15 Lives of Hugo August
by Claire North | Buy this book
The author shows great imagination and storytelling. At the outset I was worried in case it was some sort of copy of Kate Atkinson's 'Life After Life' (another of my favourite books) but it is very different.

Robert (Southend-on-Sea)

I am a local prolific author who writes in various genre ie Historical Fiction, Fictional Crime, Irish Romantic Fiction and short stories. I did until recently have four books published in the USA but alas my publisher contacted me and returned all rights back to me and cancelled my contracts?. Disappointed yet determined I intend to carry on writing since its a labour of love. I have so much knowledge to pass on to those struggling with writing and tips on how to avoid those scams and the vanity press. I am of course 80 years old but I have so many ideas in my head which may or may not help others?.Maybe a local book club or those who are like me a bit of an introvert?. Many Thanks Robert James Bridge Local Author.

Well to be blunt yes its one of my own publications ie Canadian Historical Fiction and although a true story I have used fictional characters throughout. This is the story of the halifax explosion in 1917 in which almost 2,000 lives were taken when two ammunition ships collided in the harbour of Halifax Nova Scotia , the date was 6th DEC at 9am 1917 a date etched in the minds of many Canadians.

Although short in todays climate this is infact a true story using fictional characters so as not to offend living relatives. It is my premier tome even though I have other books which includes a four books series of fictional crime. What is great about this books is true and reminds us of those that gave their lives so we could enjoy the lives we have today. I wrote this books when I lived in North Wales , in a village adjacent to Kinmel Army Camp called Bodelwyddan as I stood amongst the gravers with the Maple Leaf Emblem on them .I.S.B.N. 9781952894367 .On googleplay and googlebooks plus kdpublishing and draft2digital and smashwords.
