Lynne (Ossett)

Hello, I'm looking for a local book club where we actually meet up at a venue and talk about the book. Preferably every 4 to 6 weeks. I love to try new genres and suggestions given by other members. Must admit I have let my incessant scrolling take over from my love of reading, but am trying to rectify this!

Sasha (Pontefract)

I love reading fantasy and young adult, but I'm also open to discovering new genres. I'd love to meet up semi-regularly with others and discuss books we've read.

Sasha recommends:

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

I find the story fascinating and unlike anything else I've ever read. The Faeries are more folky than dark and brooding and definitely dangerous and it's hard to describe, but this book just has great vibes.

Alan (Bradford)

Language and story keeps one alive. They outlast us. Yet stories do not die. They become other stories. Don't they?

Alan recommends:

COLD MOUNTAIN by Charles Frazier
COLD MOUNTAIN
by Charles Frazier | Learn more and buy
Good literature is almost impossible to define. Partly it is the quality of silence between words. The quality of silence at the end of a line. COLD MOUNTAIN is a journey. Although there is a destination, it is written without a horizion. One can hear Henry James or Anais Nin saying... 'All stories of worth are about love.' Even within tragedy there is a kindling. An emotional gravity one cannot resist. Compelling narrative and characters become insperable from ourselves. Story has no end. It becomes other stories.

I really enjoyed the psychology behind the characters and that it was based in France which I enjoyed as it mentally took me away from my surroundings and I could fully emerse myself into reading the book.

Frank Pollard awakens in an alley, knowing nothing but his name and that he is in danger. Over the next few days he develops a fear of sleep because when he wakes he finds blood on his hands and bizarre and terrifying objects in his pockets. Distraught and desperate, Frank begs husband-and wife detective team Bobby and Julie Dakota to get to the bottom of his mysterious, amnesiac fugues. It seems a simple job, but they are drawn into ever-darkening realms where they encounter the nightmare, hate-filled figure stalking Frank. And their lives are threatened, as is that of Julie's gentle, Down's-syndrome brother, Thomas. To Thomas, death is the 'bad place' from which there is no return. But as each of them ultimately learns, there are equally bad places in the world of the living, places so steeped in evil that, in contrast,Death seems to be almost a relief
