Matthew (Halifax)

I'm in my early 40's, I like a mixture of genres and particular favourites are sci-fi, fantasy and horror. I have started reading again after taking a break, because unfortunately real-life got in the way! Always looking out for book clubs in the area, good recommendations or anyone who wishes to connect through reading and find new friends.

Mohammed Amin (Bradford)

I always enjoyed reading when I was growing up, one of the first books I read was in my teens which was the autobiography of Malcolm X which had a profound influence on my thinking and opened up my young and impressionable mind to the injustice and cruelty of racism and oppression of black people in America. I remember having a dictionary on hand as I didn't understand some of the meanings of the words and also ensuring I could use some of these concepts and words to ask adults critical questions aswell as impress my friends with my expanded vocabulary. I have a wide selection of books at home which I've purchased throughout the years by looking at reviews aswell as previewing the book to check it piqued my interest. Since the advent of the Internet, social media, satellite TV and smartphones I don't read anymore and when I do read I do it without purpose or concentration, I want to discover my love of reading and meet like minded people who I can share my passion with and develop my understanding and appreciation of knowledge, language and the human condition.

Mohammed Amin recommends:

48 laws of power
by Robert Greene | Learn more and buy
Excellent book that details how humans have used and misused power throughout history, you will be able to pick upon some of the 48 laws that you have used to dominate others and other laws which people have used to exploit you for their self interest. The book draws upon various true stories that illustrate the use of the law aswell as the cost if you ignore the reality of the law. There is a summary at the end of each chapter aswell as the authors insight of reversals of the law (situations where you shouldn't observe the law as it is counterproductive to your self interest) There are a good number of quotes from famous figures in history and across cultures aswell that entertains and informs you. Even if you are not interested in gaining power, there are alot of tools you can use to guard yourself from situations and people who will manipulate you and take advantage for their own ends.

Caitlin (Wakefield)

I love reading and would love to connect with others. I don’t have many friends that love to read so feel like it would be good to have others to chat to! I love thrillers and mystery but am open to try new genres this year!

Caitlin recommends:

Greenclogs (Halifax)

I'm open to reading most genres (not a fan of romance though). I especially love literature that takes me to places and cultures I've not experienced in real life. Would be interested in meeting for monthly/fortnightly book discussion, online or in-person (though as a full-time wheelchair-user I need accessible venues which are limited in my area).

Greenclogs recommends:

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo
Last Night at the Telegraph Club

Representation of young lesbian life and love in a time and culture that isn't ready to accept these. Deals with familial rejection and how minoritised groups go about community-building and mutual aid in the face of prejudice and systemic discrimination. Super sympathetic protagonist you find yourself rooting for!

Babs (Todmorden)

Newly retired, looking to fill in my days meeting up with others with the same interests. I’m a keen reader reading anything for pleasure, interest and education. Meeting once a month to discuss others views on a chosen book can give a whole new meaning to any topic.

Martierobyn (Leeds)

I'm a 24 year old medic on a gap year, which has finally given me some time to get back into reading after a long time off. None of my friends are readers and I have so much to say on the books I'm getting through!! Since I'm still getting back into it I'm coming across mostly popular fiction for now (e.g. I enjoyed Yellowface. I did not enjoy Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow), but I like non-fiction (e.g. Rebel Ideas, Why We Sleep, Taxtopia) too. Would like to read more fantasy, science fiction and thrillers. Currently reading: Shuggie Bain, Douglas Stuart

Martierobyn recommends:

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I never usually read space/science fiction (although I do sometimes enjoy it in shows/movies), but I tried this one on Audible and it was SO good. I'm a STEM girlie so I appreciated the sciency parts of it, but more than that this was such an intriguing read because the reader discovers key parts of the main character's history at the same time as him. The tension is kept high the whole time and the characters, particularly the co-star, absolutely had my heart. This is my first recommendation whenever anyone asks me the question

I'm Peter, I love a good suspense thriller or a good crime drama. I've just recently started getting back into reading again and have an obsession with Harlan Coben novels but can read anything that has a good plot.

Peter recommends:

Murder at Mt. Fuji
by Shizuko Natuki | Learn more and buy
It's promoted through Waterstones as the best murder thriller out at the moment.
