Good literature is almost impossible to define. Partly it is the quality of silence between words. The quality of silence at the end of a line. COLD MOUNTAIN is a journey. Although there is a destination, it is written without a horizion. One can hear Henry James or Anais Nin saying... 'All stories of worth are about love.' Even within tragedy there is a kindling. An emotional gravity one cannot resist. Compelling narrative and characters become insperable from ourselves. Story has no end. It becomes other stories.

This is book is so colorful and immersive, so full of smells and textures, yet at the same time so dark. It is a very personal insight into the lives of those who opposed tyranny in Trujillo's Dominican Republic. Both tragic and inspiring.

Fantastic character voices, genre-spanning, immersive

This book is great as it opened my eyes and mind to a world I've never really considered. How geography has played such a huge role in the power houses becoming power houses, and how certain countries are blessed and cursed by their geography. It's extremely educational and it's helped me see the world for what it is.

A bleak glimpse into a dystopian future inherited by machines, where humans live without passion and without books. But that changes when one young man meets a girl and rediscover the joys and importance of reading in a world where humans have seemingly lost all passion and hope.
