Scott (Taunton)

Hi I'm Scott, living in Taunton. Currently reading (and writing) fantasy books, and would love to meet some like minded people to bond with over a mutual interest in fantasy.

Scott recommends:

The Amulet Of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
The Amulet Of Samarkand
by Jonathan Stroud | Buy this book
Despite technically being a YA novel, the author manages to portray a surprisingly nuanced view on British imperialism and classism. Stroud also manages in the same book to create one of the most hilarious characters I've had the pleasure of reading, the djinn Bartimaeus. I particularly enjoyed the footnotes during the Bartimaeus sections of the book, as his wisecracks and japes also manage to sneak their way into those. In short, politicial intrigue + an easy to follow writing style + a hilariously sassy spirit = quite the book.
Northern Lights
by Phillip Pullman | Buy this book
This is the book that got me into fantasy as a teenager. Pullman does a fantastic job at creating an alternate Earth that still feels fantastical, even though there are still many similarities with our own world. Despite many calling this children's literature, there are still some very heavy themes.

Sarah (Braintree)

New chapter, new town—anyone else believe the best stories start with a great setting? 📚 I’m 30 and just moved to Braintree, hoping to meet fellow book lovers who enjoy a good chat about what they’re reading. Whether it’s a thriller that keeps you turning pages past midnight or a story that just gets you, I’m all in. Let’s get lost in a good book.

Sarah recommends:

The Alchemist
by Paulo Coehlo | Buy this book
If you haven’t read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho yet, consider this your sign. It’s a simple story with a quietly powerful message: sometimes the universe nudges us toward exactly where we’re meant to be—if we’re paying attention. This book reminded me that wonder isn’t something we outgrow—it’s something we return to when we start listening. Highly recommend for anyone who loves meaningful stories with a touch of magic (and no, not the wand-waving kind).

Dan (Leeds)

When I was a kid, I was an avid reader, especially for long fantasy novels, but I had fallen off along the way. I have recently started to get back into reading and have taken an interest in the romance genre, which I had barely touched before. I am open to broadening my horizons with some choice recommendations and would love to meet up and get to know other readers.

Dan recommends:

The Wandering Inn by Pirateaba
The Wandering Inn
by Pirateaba | Buy this book
A high fantasy world with grounded and brutally realistic stakes. The series is incredibly long, and a very slow and difficult start, but the payoff with the world building and character drama is practically unbeatable. Please note this book may not be for anyone who is not looking to read material that covers sensitive topics and there are very visceral and uncomfortable depictions of triggering topics such as assault, PTSD, and racial discrimination. Please read the trigger warnings and proceed with caution.
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

A romance/fantasy/ political drama about a musician who has a secret heritage. I especially appreciate the musical references and the unique world building.

AnnieLou (Chipping Norton)

I'm new to the Witney/Chipping Norton and love reading all things fantasy and romantasy. Dabbled with a bit of light horror and crime fiction (love me a true crime podcast) but do always find myself back in the fantasy section for a bit of comfort. Looking for a good chinwag about something other than the weather and a bit of guidance about what to read next.

I read meanly romance, particularly dark romance. Some of my favourite writers are: Harley Laroux, J Rose, Ali Hazelwood, Angel Lawson and Samatha Rue. Orwell's amazing grasp of prose where it is always evocative but never takes priority over the story he is telling.
